10 Actors with Celebrity Siblings: Where Are They Now?

Just like doctors, lawyers, and military veterans, actors are often following in their parents’ and siblings’ vocational footsteps. It can be easy to spot family resemblances in acting families like the Baldwins, or brothers Owen and Luke Wilson, but you may not always realize which of your favorite celebrities are related. These famous actors all have celebrity siblings who have kept it in the arts and entertainment family, as actors, writers, directors, muscians, and more. Find out how their careers have intertwined, and what they’re up to now:

John Cusack, Joan Cusack, and Ann Cusack

One of Chicago’s favorite families, the Cusacks are brimming with talent. John Cusack, though the youngest, is perhaps the most well known actor of this close-knit family. Through teen stardom in films like Sixteen Candles and Say Anything, and quirky cult hits Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, John has enjoyed working with his big sisters Ann and Joan. (He’s also snuck siblings Bill and Susie into some of his films.) John Cusack balances popcorn flicks like 2012 with independent films like Being John Malkovich, and helped found film company New Crime Productions. Next up is Shangai, a 40s period piece that also stars Ken Watanabe, Li Gong, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chow Yun-Fat; as well as horror crime film The Factory with Sonya Walger.

Due to Hollywood’s idiotic insistance on actresses that all look the same, Joan Cusack has settled into the colorful and comedic character actress through much of her career. Though perhaps not as well known as her brother John, Yahoo! Movies points out that Joan has an Academy Award nomination to her name, for 1988 film Working Girl. Best known for her memorable turns films like Broadcast News, In & Out, and Addams Family Values, Joan Cusack has also done admirable work in dramas like Friends With Money and Arlington Road. Up next is Mars Needs Moms! with Seth Green and possibly Hitman 2.

You might not know that Ann Cusack is the oldest of the Cusack siblings, and you also might not realize how many acting roles she’s had. With a lead role in Jeff Foxworthy’s 1996 self-titled sitcom, she’s also appeared on a myriad of blockbuster series, including Grey’s Anatomy, Boston Legal, Frasier, Bones, and The Unit. Up next is the big screen thriller Crooked Lane with Brett Cullen.

Ralph Fiennes and Joseph Fiennes

We didn’t yet know about younger brother Joseph when Ralph Fiennes was making a name for himself in stirring award-winning dramas like Schindler’s List, Quiz Show, and The English Patient. Then, in 1998, Joseph Fiennes burst onto the scene with roles in two Oscar-nominated films, Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love. Joseph moved on to smaller, independent films, but looked to break out of his “brother of Ralph” shadow on American TV with mystery series FlashForward. Sadly, it was cancelled, but TVOvermind rumors suggest Starz may pick it up. This could get tricky for Joseph, who’s set to star as Merlin in 2011 series Camelot with Eva Green and Claire Forlani.

Big brother Ralph Fiennes has continued to cultivate a strong career with his creepy-terrifying role as Voldemort in the Harry Potter series, along with his usual talent for landing Oscar-bait films like The Reader, In Bruges, and The Hurt Locker. Along with the much-anticipated final Harry Potter films, Ralph has an upcoming role in an adaptation of John LeCarre’s novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The latter also stars Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender, and Colin Firth.

Ralph and Joseph Fiennes support each other’s work, and have appeared on talk shows together, and with sister Sophie, a producer. The Fiennes brothers have three additional biological siblings and one foster brother, all with a variety of occupations.

Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson

Like many folks who took years to realize Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine were siblings, I only recently realized the family connection between Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson. Though younger, Kate Hudson made a splash in Hollywood with her resemblance to mom Goldie Hawn and her breakthrough role as Penny Lane in Almost Famous. She went on to a successful career in lightweight comedies like How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and You, Me, and Dupree, but has since moved into more serious territory with thriller The Killer Inside Me and Oscar winner Nine. Next up is romance dramedy Earthbound, with Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Bates, Peter Dinklage, and Gael Garcia Bernal.

Oliver Hudson has done film work as well, but is best known for his work on two hit TV series: Dawson’s Creek and Rules of Engagement. When not working on his series, Oliver supports his baby sis’ at premieres, and People reports he and his wife Erinn Bartlett are busy with the latest addition to the family, baby Bodhi Hawn Hudson. (Try to say that three times fast!)

Matt Dillon and Kevin Dillon

Though only a year apart in age, Kevin Dillon has long been the little brother living in the shadow of famous actor Matt Dillon. Big brother Matt made a name for himself as a strong actor and teen hearthrob in The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, and Drugstore Cowboy, and went on to have an impressive career of dramatic and comedic roles, including surprise smash There’s Something About Mary.

Kevin Dillon started strong with big name films like Heaven Help Us and Platoon, he eventually lost ground and ended up plugging away in straight-to-video and TV films. As Yahoo! Movies notes, recurring guest spots on NYPD Blue and 24 got him noticed again, and he landed the role of a lifetime as Johnny Drama on HBO’s smash hit Entourage. With art imitating life, Kevin artfully added a lovable sincerity to his part as the hard-working, hapless, and unknown actor brother of swoonworthy movie star Vincent Chase.

Kevin has the 8th and final season of Entourage to work on, along with the rumored follow-up big screen version. Up next for Matt Dillon is Rio Sex Comedy with Irene Jacob, Bill Pullman and Charlotte Rampling.

Ashley Judd and Wynonna Judd

Big sister Wynonna Judd started out as the more famous sister. Pairing up with their mother Naomi in country music duo The Judds, Wynonna enjoyed a decade of successful singles and mountains of Grammys and Country Music Awards. After her mother’s retirement in 1991, Wynonna set off on a solo country music career. Her website lists amongst her accomplishments 16 top ten singles, 10 million albums sold, and 17 years of sold-out tours. Along with a new album, Sing, Wynonna will be touring once again with Naomi for a Judds finale tour.

Right when Wynonna was starting on her solo endeavor, little sister Ashley got a 2-episode role on Star Trek: The Next Generation. An award-winning role in the film Ruby in Paradise and a part on popular TV series Sisters got Ashley Judd noticed. She’s well known for the films Smoke, Heat, Kiss the Girls, Someone Like You, and Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. Next up for Ashley Judd is the crime comedy Flypaper with Patrick Dempsey.

As she revealed to Oprah in 2006, Wynonna wasn’t told that she and Ashley had different fathers until she was 30. This caused a strain in the relationship with her mother, along with other issues. Ashley has also had conflicts with her conservative mother over the content of many of her film roles. Ashley and Wynonna have tried to maintain a close relationship despite these family struggles.

Jennifer Lopez and Linda Lopez

Anyone who’s seen a magazine cover in the last decade should recognize Jennifer Lopez, aka J-Lo. The musician/actress started out as a “Fly Girl” dancer on improv series In Living Color, working her way up to her breakthrough role in 1997 biopic Selena. With films like Out of Sight (with George Clooney) and The Cell (with Vincent D’Onofrio and Vince Vaughn), Lopez seemed poised for a respectable film career. Her first love was music, however, and she interspersed her movie roles with successful dance/pop albums. Her 2010 album Love? is her 9th solo release. After a long hiatus, she also recently appeared in The Back-up Plan with hunky Alex O’Loughlin.

Not everyone knows that Jennifer Lopez has a celebrity sister, however. TV journalist and personality Lynda Lopez has had a media career that started in radio, and branched into news and entertainment. She’s had a variety of TV hosting and anchor jobs for local and national networks, including Fox 5 LIve in New York, VH1, and E! Entertainment. Jennifer and Lynda Lopez are very close, and have recently teamed up to form the charitable Maribel Foundation, which they hope will help bring health services and education to women and children around the world.

Bill Murray & Brian Doyle-Murray

With iconic work on Saturday Night Live and in pop culture films like Caddyshack, Stripes, and Ghostbusters, as well as memorable work in independents like Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Lost in Translation, Bill Murray might be considered the more successful than his brother Brian. But guess what? Bill Murray might not be anywhere without his big brother, who wrote for SNL as well as penning the screenplay for cult fave Caddyshack.

Brian Doyle-Murray also turns up as a hilarious character in Bill Murray’s films, including Caddyshack, Ghostbusters II, and Groundhog Day. He’s appeared on many popular TV shows like Seinfeld and Married With Children, and in movie hits like Wayne’s World and Sixteen Candles. He currently appears as Mr. Ehlert on ABC sitcom The Middle. Little brother Bill Murray has thriller Passion Play coming up, but Screen Rant reports that the mythical Ghostbusters III may be a pipe dream after all.

Penny Marshall and Gary Marshall

Forever known as Laverne from the hit sitcom Laverne & Shirley, Penny Marshall continues to act in small roles while she takes on bigger challenges behind the camera. She’s taken on the director’s chair for successful films Big, A Leauge of Their Own, and The Preacher’s Wife. This year she directed an episode of The United States of Tara.

Big brother Gary Marshall has worn all four hats in Hollywood: Producer, Director, Actor and Writer. He’s worked with sister Penny on many projects, including Laverne & Shirley and A League of Their Own. Gary often plays larger than life, demanding and terrifying comedic bosses, as in movie Soapdish and TV series Murphy Brown. He’s directed hits like Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries, and recent rom-com Valentine’s Day. Next up is directing State of the Union with Richard Gere and Annette Bening.

Jared Leto and Shannon Leto

While talented actors who try to be musicians are common, those who are talented in both arenas are rare. Jared Leto has cultivated a respected acting career in films like Prefontaine, Fight Club, and Girl, Interrupted. At the same time, he’s acted as front man and song writer for successful multi-platinum selling rock band 30 Seconds to Mars. His equally ethereal-eyed brother Shannon Leto handles drums and percussion for 30 Seconds to Mars, as well as taking part in song-writing duties. He’s also dabbled in acting, appearing with brother Jared in My So Called Life and Prefontaine. According to Hollywood News, the successful siblings are currently working on a Latin American tour for fall 2010.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhaal has been an indie favorite, and though she was steadily working, didn’t gain wider notice until 2002 when she appeared in both the quirky S&M comedy Secretary and Oscar-winning Adaptation. After high profile roles in Stranger Than Fiction and The Dark Knight, she was nominated for an Oscar for 2009 film Crazy Heart. In 2011, Maggie will appear in Hysteria, with Hugh Dancy and Rupert Everett.

Maggie also appeared in cult fave Donnie Darko with her little brother Jake Gyllenhaal, who then turned in similarly quirky performances in Bubble Boy and The Good Girl (with Jennifer Aniston). Jake went on to act with the late Heath Ledger in the beautiful yet controversial film Brokeback Mountain, followed by big roles in Jarhead, Zodiac, and Rendition. Recently he appeared in Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and next up is quirky romantic comedy Nailed with Jessica Biel and an all-star ensemble cast.
