Old Wives Tales About Pregnancy

Every woman who has ever been pregnant or is currently pregnant finds herself at one time or another being the recipient of advice from well meaning people. Some of this advice has been passed down through generations and are commonly referred to as old wives tales. Old wives tales have been around for so long that they are often regarded as fact. Some of these tales contain dire warnings about activities that should be avoided at all cost by pregnant women, for fear that they will harm their unborn child. Like urban myths, old wives tales are often personalized by the teller who knows for certain that her cousin’s boyfriend’s sister or some other distant relative failed to follow the advice and suffered dire consequences.

I worked with some very caring older women during my first pregnancy and out of their deep desire to help me navigate my way to mother hood, offered endless pieces of advice about what I should and shouldn’t do while pregnant. Some advice, like drinking plenty of water was sound and given whole hearted approval from my doctor.
Drinking plenty of water is a good habit at any time, but especially when you are expecting. Water can help you avoid constipation and dehydration. One reason that I read: that you should drink plenty of water so your baby won’t get dirty inside the amniotic fluid definitely fell into the category of old wives tale.

Another popular old wives tale concerns the mother to be raising her hands over her head and causing the umbilical cord to wrap around neck of the unborn baby, causing strangulation. It is true that sometimes the cord will find its way around the infant, but that is caused by the natural movements of the baby in the uterus. Nothing the mother does causes the cord to wrap around the baby. Besides, if it were true, how would you get dressed? If there were any truth to this rumor, there would be no maternity clothing designed to go over the head. And how would you reach items in the grocery store? Obviously there is no truth to this story.

Pregnant women have enough to focus on, making sure that they have a healthy baby. Old wives tales may be good for a laugh but any serious advice should come from medical professionals. They know how to ensure the health and safety of both mother and baby.

NYC Fashion is at the Center of Cool

Here’s an interesting twist on the “Kevin Bacon Game” for you: what is the connection between NYC Fashion and the reign of the 16th-Century Russian Czar known to history as Ivan The Terrible?

You may never have heard of Roman Petrovich Tyrtov, but if you enjoy old movie musicals from the 30s or are a devotee of early Broadway theatre, you know him by his initials, “R.T.” – or as it was pronounced in French, “Erte.”

Czar Ivan IV (who was probably no more or less “terrible” than any of his contemporaries) was notable for transforming Russia from a small medieval kingdom into a vast, multi-ethnic empire; Erte’s earliest known ancestors were part of this ruler’s court and inner circle. Erte’s father, Pyotr Ivanovich, was a Russian Fleet admiral and headed the Russian Ministry of the Navy under Czar Nikolai Romanov just prior to the Russo-Japanese War.

It was into this remarkable family that a boy who would grow up to define NYC fashion during the Art Deco period was born in St. Petersburg on 23 November 1892.

As you might imagine, Erte’s father had other ambitions for him than that of a fashion designer. However, the young man named Roman had no desire to pursue a naval career, and left home at the age of 18 to go to Paris and become a designer of fine women’s clothing. Nonetheless, sensitive to his father’s pride and his family’s military tradition, he started going by his initials in order to spare the Tyrtov family any embarassment.

Erte’s influence on NYC Fashion was soon to be felt; in 1915, only twenty-three years old, he was hired by the first American fashion magazine, Harper’s Bazaar – a publication which still reports anything and everything you want to know about NYC fashion.

Although first hired by Hollywood, prominent New York producers Florenz Ziefield and George White soon took note of Erte’s designs. Erte was the creator of the lavish, Art-Deco themed costumes that adorned Ziegfield’s girls in his Follies of 1923 as well as George White’s Scandals.

Sadly, Erte’s contribution to NYC fashion over the course of his 97-year lifespan is largely forgotten today; in fact, the largest collection of Erte’s work is to be found not in New York, but in Tokyo. Nonetheless, Erte’s sleek designs continue to influence the world of NYC fashion well into the 21st century. And for modern women who feel pressured to measure up to a corporate definition of beauty in a commercialized world, here is some advice from the master himself: “A resourceful woman who is almost downright plain can achieve the reputation of a beauty simply by announcing to everybody she meets that she is one.”
That could be one philosophy behind NYC Fashion.

Mobile Veterinary X-Ray Solutions

Both large and small-animal veterinary practices add additional value to the services they provide by offering mobile veterinary units in vans or trucks. Sometimes this is the only way to see your animal patients, but it can be challenging because you essentially need to bring all of the basics that would be provided at your office on the road with you. This also includes Veterinary x-ray equipment. Many vets choose to use Veterinary Digital X-ray solutions to meet this challenge. These can be sized to fit in a vehicle, and will provide you the information your need to offer excellent patient care even away from your main office.

Veterinarians can choose from Veterinary CR or Veterinary DR systems. These are digital imaging systems, both of which can be used in a mobile environment. Both CR and DR imagers will take digital x-rays that will be converted to the dicom format used for medical digital images. Both types of image capture systems are available in mobile models that can be easily rolled about on hand carts with wheels, so that you can move the equipment into place around your patient. Mobile systems are also lightweight, making them more convenient to move and load into your vehicle. Systems will take on a compact form for ease of getting the equipment into your mobile unit as well. CR systems have the advantage of being the most cost-effective digital imaging solution currently available, and they have the added advantage of offering you the flexibility to retrofit existing film imaging systems so that they can also take digital images. DR imaging systems offer the highest resolution imagers on the medical market today.

For even more versatility while out on the road, you can also use a mobile Veterinary digital x-ray system in conjunction with a Veterinary PACS software and hardware unit running on a laptop computer. The PACS system will then allow you to view the digital medical images you take out in the field, giving you speedy results and diagnoses. Digital images in dicom format may then also be sent via a wireless Internet connection back to your main office for further study and storage. PACS systems can be used on workstations to enhance the digital images through the contrast, brightness, zoom and crop features built in.

When working in a mobile environment, a veterinarian might never know exactly what types of services he or she will need to be able to offer on a moment’s notice, but with a digital x-ray unit on board you will have a major system in place for gaining valuable patient information.

"One Day at a Time, Sweet Jean Size . . . . . ."

I started training about a year ago in three months I lost nearly two stone and went from a size 14 to a between a size 6 and 8. I loved training, adored it, but, never had the figure that was my ideal, even when I got down to a size 6!!!

Then I met my new partner who had been into fitness all his life, but when we started living together, training stopped and loved upness began, and, believe you and me I have no regrets.

The thing is that the loved upness didn’t stop, and still hasn’t, but the size 6 has receded back and realising my new clothes were no longer fitting AT ALL I decided to go back into training. So got the picture of the body I wanted in my mind, even off pulled one off the internet so I would have something to properly aim for and off I set.

Week 1 gave up, kept looking in the mirror size 8 never mind 6 was still far into the future. Then I became totally fed up and very down and dismal on myself about how I had sunk back into not training again. Told myself and my partner I would restart next week, then, next week came I would start then give up, same old reason.

Looking in the mirror seeing the spare tyre just made me so despondent. My partner, due to the fact he has trained his body all his life can put on weight then, within a couple of weeks shift the whole bloody lot, this didn’t help, it just made me more fed up and toe curlingly jealous.

Then whilst looking through an abs building site it dawned on me that there are two groups of people. The first gauges their progress against how near they are to attaining some kind of an ideal goal. The second group measures their progress from the place where they started.

Measuring your progress against an ideal is like trying to travel to the horizon. You can never get there because no matter how much you move toward it, the horizon will always be a long distance off, as it was with me, no matter how fit or slim I became it was never enough, so my goal always seemed to be an equal distance away from where I was when I started.

People that use this strategy in deciding whether or not they are making progress are always frustrated because it seems that they are making no progress.

The second group of people are those that note where they were when they started. When they look back, it is obvious that they have made progress – even if it is just a little progress.

The problem that I encountered, and have since recognised, is that I did not stop to celebrate my success. Instead I kept looking at where I was and where I wanted to go and felt a sense of disappointment when I should have been celebrating my progress of how far I had travelled.

So for anyone and everyone who is trying to do anything. Learn to measure your progress from where you started. If you measure your progress any other way – you will always feel deflated and despondent. You ARE making progress. Make sure you celebrate even the smallest success. If you are trying to make go of a new business venture celebrate anything even down to just one person looking at your site/shop/etc. If you are on a weight losing journey celebrate the small things ie giving up sugar in coffee, an ounce of weight loss anything and everything. If you will just do this one small thing, you will notice that more success will come to you faster.

An Overview of Drug Addiction

Dependence on a drug is influenced by the personality of the drug-taker, circumstances, and the drug itself. Certain kinds of personality, especially the psychopathic, the immature and the unstable, readily become addicted to drugs and will use any drug that is available, indicating that the nature of the person is more significant than the nature of the drug. If one drug becomes difficult to obtain the addict will just use another drug.

A drug may be used simply because it is easily accessible. For example, in certain occupations there is frequent exposure to certain kinds of drugs. In some cases people become addicted to sleeping tablets first given to them in hospital as a sedative.

A drug itself may have certain attractions, and produce certain desired effects. For example, alcohol may be used to reduce inhibitions, morphine to kill pain, and barbiturates to produce ‘highs’. Also some drugs are more likely to lead to dependence than others. There is considerably greater psychological dependence on heroin, morphine, cocaine, and amphetamine than on marijuana, and there is greater physical dependence on heroin and morphine than on barbiturates, alcohol and amphetamine, and physical dependence is even less on cocaine and marijuana.

The most common addictive drugs are the opiates or narcotics such as heroin or morphine. Morphine can be prescribed to relieve pain without fear of addiction, though if taken often enough it will lead to addiction. Heroin, which is a derivative of morphine, is even more likely to cause addiction. If heroin is withdrawn from the addict he will experience restlessness and sweating.

Physical dependence is a state of addiction which develops from taking increasing amounts of the drug as tolerance increases. Eventually it is impossible to withdraw the drug without severe withdrawal symptoms, in some cases leading to death. The need to relieve these symptoms is a feature of physical addiction.

Psychological dependence is the formation of a habit involving milder forms of addictive drugs such as tobacco, alcohol, and amphetamines. A person develops a habit of taking a particular drug because it produces a certain effect or change in mood. The habit is established when the individual takes the drug irrespective of mood. This indicates the psychological need and the individual becomes disturbed if the drug is not available when needed.

Addiction of tobacco nicotine is more psychological than physical. The withdrawal symptoms include craving for a cigarette, sleeplessness, coughing, and increase in appetite. The dependence on alcohol, which has been described as a liquid barbiturate, is less likely than dependence on other barbiturates such as amphetamines. The use of solid barbiturates has now been largely replaced by the use of tranquilizers such as diazepam and oxazepam.

Drug addiction is responsible for thousands of deaths by suicide and accidental overdose, for considerable private suffering, for reduced working efficiency and for the loss of millions of working hours.

The eventual effects on the individual vary with the drug. In the case of cigarette smoking there may be damage to the lungs and arteries, and in case of alcoholism, brain damage.

Illegal drug-taking can lead to conflict with the legal authorities and to danger from association with criminals. A heroin addict risks being sold a sample of indeterminate strength, with the consequent dangers of over dosage.

Treatment of addiction is extremely difficult. Psychotherapy is often used, though it is seldom successful. Alcoholics can be helped by Alcoholics Anonymous. Dependency on cocaine or amphetamine is treated by withdrawal of the drug. Heroin addicts may need a steady supply of a drug: in Australia methadone is provided, in Britain the registered addict is maintained on a legal supply of heroin. Some argue that heroin addiction should be treated as an infectious disease and that addicts should be isolated, otherwise they will spread the habit.

The spread of drugs in Western societies continues despite attempts to prevent it, and the problems of drug dependence are still controversial.

Online Clep Study Makes it Easier to Pass Your Exam

If you have a computer with an Internet connection, you can study for your College Level Examination Program, or clep, test. Clep testing could be for you if you need to speed up the time it takes to earn your college degree. By taking a clep exam, you can earn anywhere from three to twelve college credits that can be applied to your degree program. Although there are thirty-four exams offered by the College Board, not every college offers credit for every exam, so you will need to check with your college or university about this. However, if they do offer credit, you can save both time and money through clep testing.

Online clep study can be the clep prep you need to help you achieve a passing score. Clep study can take several forms; finding the one or ones that work best for you may take a little experimentation.

One online place to start for specific information about what to expect on your clep exam is the website for the College Board. Here they offer a description of each exam, as well as suggestions for what to study in order to succeed.

After this, as part of your clep prep you will want to check out a clep study guide. Several are available, offered by InstantCert, Peterson’s, the College Board and others. Which you choose can depend on your grasp of the subject and how comfortable you are with taking exams. Many students find that a combination of several guides is the best way for them to excel at clep study.

Online clep study is available through InstantCert. Offering a series of online flashcards with questions and answers, this program offers a quick and useful review of a subject that takes little time but results in improved test scores.

Another online clep study aid are timed practice tests, available from Peterson’s and others. Practice tests give you a chance to see how questions are phrased, and even though you will have different questions for your actual exam, it helps you prepare by helping you think through it in advance, thus saving your valuable time on test day. The practice tests also give a great review of the material, another benefit that comes from this type of clep study guide.

Websites and discussion forums also offer another form of online clep study help. Here you can talk to people who have recently taken clep exams, and learn from their experiences. You might also learn some different ways of studying for your particular subject area test that can be helpful in your quest for a passing grade on the clep.

How is Typing on the Amazon Kindle?

The Amazon Kindle is easily the most popular ebook reader on the market, but the ebook reader market is more divide than, say, the smartphone market (which is dominated by Apple). Individual features are important for ebook buyers, and the limitations and abilities of the Kindle are what initially set it apart from the crowd.

With the addition of the Kindle’s basic Internet browser, some ebook fans have wondered how the Kindle’s keyboard stands up against a typical keyboard. Here’s a look at how it feels to type on the Amazon Kindle.

The Kindle’s Keyboard

The keyboard on the Kindle consists of QWERTY buttons laid out in a home row centered format. The buttons are slightly diagonal, which makes it easier to type without accidentally hitting keys unintentionally. However, the buttons on the Kindle’s keyboard are also extremely small.

Limitations

It would be difficult to type normally on the Amazon Kindle’s keyboard, especially if you have larger hands. The Kindle is designed for thumb typing. After typing for a few hours with the ebook reader, I can say that it’s easier than some alternatives in my opinion, most notably the Apple iPad (although the iPad can use an attached keyboard, so this is a bit of a moot point). I sort of like that the Kindle didn’t use a touch screen, because touch screens are awful for typing. However, I could easily see how the buttons on the Kindle could break or become unresponsive if the device isn’t properly cared for.

Another drawback of the Amazon Kindle’s keyboard is the speed of the device itself. Hunt and peck typers will find it a bit annoying that typed text takes a moment to show up on the screen. You’re not likely to notice the delay when you’re searching for a book or a song, but you certainly might in some situations.

Knowing The Kindle’s Audience

The drawbacks of typing on the Kindle are somewhat mitigated by the fact that there’s not really much to type; you might search for a certain book or enter an address on the basic Internet browser, but it’s hard to imagine anyone trying to type out a research paper length document on the Kindle given its bare features. The keyboard of the Kindle is ultimately passable, and in fact much more intuitive than it needs to be. Nobody buys an Amazon Kindle for its typing abilities, but there’s nothing particularly frustrating or poorly designed about the device’s keyboard.

What do you think of typing on the Amazon Kindle? Post your thoughts in the comments section below.

Romantic Couples Costumes You Can Make Yourself

Turn a romantic evening or Halloween night into a special treat with these romantic couples costumes you can make yourself. No sewing is needed, just a visit to a craft store. There you’ll find all sorts of items that were never designed for making romantic couples costumes, like clip-on curtain rings and ornamental curtain cords, which you can use to connect fabric in elegant ways.

My favorite easy way to make romantic couples costumes uses duct tape to coat old clothes with matching patterns, like a heart on one costume and a bow and arrow on the other. Still more fun are romantic couples costumes of famous couples from literature, movies or real life. So pick your favorite from this enticing collection of romantic couples costumes you can make yourself.

Mirrored Lovers

For a sexy romantic couples costume you can make yourself, turn your bodies into mirrors that reflect each other. At a craft store look for a plain mirror with no frame (as this will be cheaper). In addition buy 2 high-quality duct tapes in your favorite colors. If you both like the same color, buy two variations of it to make a sexy romantic couples costume from two matching mirrors rather than identical ones.

To make the Mirrored Lovers romantic couples costume, lay a strip of duct tape over the edge of the mirror and fold it over on both sides. Repeat this step until you create a thick border around the mirror. Next, add romance to this romantic couples costume by increasing the size of the duct tape border to create the shape of a heart from the remaining (exposed) mirror.

Finally wrap duct tape around rope to create a duct tape cord. Attach the cord to the sides of the mirror (with duct tape, of course) to finish making the essential part of this romantic couples costume. Now, when you hang the mirrors around your necks and look at each other, you’ll see infinite reflections of yourselves, as if your love for each other runs deep into your heart.

It’s an easy romantic couples costume to make and one full of romance. And you can heighten the importance of your lover’s mirrors by each wearing clothes to match your mirrors exactly. All black for his black mirror, and all white for her white mirror, for example. Make this romantic couples costume a true set by pairing the colors logically, white with black, purple with pink, aquamarine blue with dark blue, etc.

Rainbow Lovers

For a breathtaking romantic couples costume you can make yourself, why not become two matching rainbows? At a party store buy helium balloons in many colors. Select a color theme for each of you. One of you can be water colors, like light blue, dark blue, aquamarine, grass green, hunter green, dark purple.

Now make this romantic couples costume more interesting by choosing a different color scheme for the next rainbow costume, like fire colors, red, orange, yellow, gold, copper and dark crimson. To make this romantic couples costume a brilliant success, don’t fill your balloons until the day you wish to dress up in your costumes.

To make the Rainbow Lovers romantic couples costume, each of you should dress in all the colors of his balloons. Then make your romantic couples costume even more interesting by adding accessories. A man can wear blue jeans with a green sweater, purple gloves, light blue scarf and a hunter green hat. A woman can wear red shoes, copper tights, dark yellow skirt, orange top and a crimson hat.

To make this romantic couples costume breathtaking, tie the helium balloons all around you, to his belt loops or her bra strap, to your arms and under your armpits. And be sure to hold a cluster of rainbow balloons in your hands.

Poetic Lovers

For the most romantic couples costume you can make yourself become giant poetry scrolls and dedicate a secret poem to each other. At a craft store buy rough, pale fabric in earth tones like sand or the color of an old parchment. Also buy craft wire, duct tape in a similar color, a stencil of the alphabet and gold spray paint. (You can also buy Rust Oleum hammered gold paint at home improvement stores).

To make the Poetic Lovers romantic couples costume each of you should create a giant scroll to wear over his body. The scroll will be made of a front and back, connect with taped fabric across your shoulders, so in fact you’ll be making a total of 4 giant poetry scrolls for this romantic couples costume.

Fold the fabric in half and cut it to match the length of your height from ankle to shoulder. Place craft wire at the bottom and side hems of each scroll, fold the fabric over the wire, then use the duct tape to secure the fold on the reverse side of the fabric. Finally, for each of the romantic couples costume cut two strips of fabric to connect the front and back together, so you can wear the scrolls over your shoulders.

The romantic aspect of this romantic couples costume you can make yourself should be done in secret. Each of you should write two poems, one for the back and one for the front. Use the stencil and gold spray paint to create immaculate handwriting. Here are a dozen audio love poems to inspire you.

Finish making this beautiful romantic couples costume by rolling the ends of the canvas as if it were a scroll. The craft wire will hold the fabric in place.

Star-cross Lovers

For the saddest romantic couples costume you can make yourself, create a pair of costumes that match and conflict simultaneously. Buy black, white and red duct tape. Take an old outfit or pajamas as the base on which to make this romantic couples costume. Cut strips of duct tape to coat the front of the garment all in black, then coat the back of the garment all in white.

For the second romantic couples costume you are making reverse the color order, using black on the back and white on the front. This will lend the romantic couples costume a feel of jarring opposites, like night and day.

Now add sadness to the romantic couples costume you are making. Using red duct tape create the image of a cracked heart on the breast of each costume. You can also create a stencil of a cracked heart and use red spray paint. Next cut the shapes of drops out of the red duct tape and paste these blood drops below the heart in a line of trickles.

Repeat the motif of tears to enhance the beauty of the romantic couples costume. Paint black teardrops beneath your eyes.

with This Ring

As I was rummaging the other day
I happened to come accross,
a ring that I had bought for you
and thought that I had lost.

Each diamond tells a story
of many years gone by,
with each and every memory
brings a tear to my eyes.

the first year we were married
we sealed it with this ring,
I had just turned twenty
you only sixteen.

the second year another diamond
just a small token of your worth,
you brought my life more meaning
than anything on earth.

the third year was even better
like living in a dream,
with more love and effection
another diamond to the ring.

another year gone by
they passed off by the score,
untill at last the diamond ring
had no room, for one diamond more.

Snack with Scrabble

A student of mine brought CHEEZ-IT baked snack crackers in his lunch the other day and I really didn’t pay much attention to them until I noticed the tiny squares had letters on them. LETTERS… yeah each cracker had a different letter, and like Alphabets cereal or Campbell’s Alphabet soup a child can make words. What sets these letters apart is the fact that Sunshine CHEEZE-IT’S promote the Scrabble crossword game for juniors.

My Husband and I love to play the board game Scrabble. For a while there we were playing every day. While our daughter was in the Military and far away from home we kept our minds busy with anything that did not revolve around the news or the T.V. Scrabble gave us an outlet that allowed us to sit together, challenge each other, snack, and have fun. The Scrabble board game is like a crossword puzzle for two or more players who arrange little tile letters to make words. Hasbro now has Scrabble available on-line to make it even easier to enjoy. We’re on our 3rd boxed game.

CHEEZ-IT Baked Snack Crackers from Sunshine

The little square crackers are the perfect dimension and to create the popular Scrabble Game tiles these crackers are the perfect matched size. When I purchased a box of CHEEZ-IT Baked snack crackers with the Scrabble logo on the box I could not wait to spell my name, and I could not get anybody in my family to play a game of Scrabble with me though so maybe I’ll take the box to school. The bad thing is we probably won’t get any words spelled since the tiles are edible and kids love CHEEZ-IT’S. If you’ve ever eaten these tasty crackers you’ll know that on the back of the box it says in Giant letters…GET YOUR OWN BOX.

If these tasty snack crackers, along with the really cool letters imprinted on them weren’t enough Sunshine went as far as printing a game board on the back, complete with WILD spaces, fun animals, and game rules. The box I bought was Game 2 of 3. The object is to create words on the game board using 26 scrabble Jr. CHEEZ-IT crackers. Collect points by completing words.

I was going to write out the rules for you so you can play, but then I realized that you’ll need to …GET YOUR OWN BOX.

This author was in no way compensated by Sunshine to review this product I had to buy my OWN BOX!

Radiology Medical Imaging for the Growing Practice

The falling cost of personal computing technologies has revolutionized the medical field in general and radiology medical imaging in particular. While hospitals and medical facilities have strictly utilized film x-rays in the past, today that has all changed with the advent of digital medical imaging using the DICOM format. Because of this new format, which is similar to the popular jpeg format used for digital images from cameras, a variety of medical hardware and software systems can all function together because all can read and edit the DICOM medical imaging format. You can now find radiology viewers, and even radiology web viewers, scaled to suit all types of offices, from medical practices in their infancy to large thriving practices, as well as hospitals and other imaging centers.

It’s important to make sure you have an imaging system that can grow with your practice. You can find basic systems that you can expand as your budget and your need for additional features increases.

After digital medical images have been taken, they will need to be sent to radiology viewers for study and diagnoses. A PACS system is used to route the images from the modalities to the viewers. Having radiology web viewers in place will greatly speed up and expand how you can use your viewers. In order to send digital images throughout your office or hospital, you need to have a local-area network in place.

You can expand the viewing possibilities even further through the use of a wide-area network, where numerous clinics and medical facilities have communications that are networked together. Even more versatility is added with virtual private networks, which allow referring physicians located anywhere in the world to send and receive digital images securely to and from your viewers. This greatly speeds the process of reaching a diagnosis for a patient, thereby providing better patient care, while at the same time optimizing your office workflow. Security is also built into the system, which is a requirement for compliance with HIPPA regulations concerning patient confidentiality.

Fully functional radiology viewers allow multiple users to view radiology studies simultaneously. Multiple studies may also be viewed side-by-side, with speedy retrieval times an integral part of the systems. Prior studies can be customized to be retrieved, and the layout and positioning of the studies can also be optimized to speed up repetitive and routine tasks automatically.

You can find distributors of radiology medical imaging hardware and software online that offer equipment suitable for your growing medical practice.

Even though it is a few months away, for those in Southern California, summer comes early. Concrete is made of very heavy materials, including sand and gravel, and therefore it is heavy work to move and shape. With the creation of stained concrete in Los Angeles, caustic chemicals are added to the concrete to turn it into all of the beautiful shades, but it does require someone with the proper training and expertise with concrete staining in Los Angeles to be able to perform this task both safely and effectively.

One dramatic way to change the look of your garden is to add a useful patio to it adorned with concrete floor staining in Los Angeles. The look of the floor will play a large role in the final appearance of the entire space, and so time spent on concrete floor staining Los Angeles is well spent. You will want the floor to be level so that tables and chairs do not wobble, and this can be tricky, especially if you need to compensate for any type of slope in the ground. Concrete contractors have experience with putting in concrete stained floors Los Angeles, and they have the equipment to create a level patio that will be a pleasure to use. Concrete floor staining in Los Angeles will make the floor a beautiful addition to your garden.

You may also need concrete stained in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles for use in retaining walls. These sorts of walls can turn a steep hillside into a usable area for entertaining and gardening. Retaining walls need to be structurally sound, because they must hold a great deal of weight from the soil in place. They are also prominently on display, so they must be attractive, which is why homeowners turn to contractors who perform concrete staining in Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley. Concrete stained in the San Fernando Valley can be used to create stunning retaining walls that are works of art. You can also use concrete stained in the San Fernando Valley for short retaining walls that add extra seating in your garden, always a plus for your parties this summer.

Somersault

Somersault, you
got some nerve. Summer
assaults the senses and sensibilities
of misfortune. Irony can’t be troubled
and I don’t presume to predict. Wildly
or otherwise is the format of my flattery.
I’d risk the likes of retribution or specified
results to ice-down the heat. Of your laugh,
I find only admiration and self-scorn
that it offends so. What
may I do to please-yes-pleasure
you. I do not like
the sun or sarcasm of palomino
girls in bikini bathing
suits(perhaps french): fried
and freshly shaven. Italian ice is no different
than warm weather treats elsewhere. Cold and sweet
are the flavors of the week-the month-the season. Avoidance
is the ultimate solution, not ultimatums. All will pass
but not at will.

" Tax Component as an Effective Instrument in the Development and Usage of Green-based Technologies in Malaysia "

” Tax Component as an Effective Instrument in the Development and Usage of Green-based Technologies in Malaysia “

Jeong Chun Phuoc, 25 dec 2009

I refer to the Datuk Halim Man’s (Secretary General for Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water) article today “Energy Solution is Right Here”, The Star -25.12.2009 at p. N35.

Achieving a ‘Grid Parity’ will take Malaysia perhaps another 10-15 years. This is the projected estimation if foreign technologies are used as a generating input into current development of renewable energy in the Malaysian context.

Local R&D into this area remains fragmented if not uncoordinated due to several constraints where financial support remains a stumbling block.

In enhancing local involvement in the research and development of sustainable green energy-related technologies, Malaysia may need to learn from international leaders such as Denmark , Germany , Japan , Korea etc depending on the specific niche area of green energy specialization.

The establishment of the recent Green Technology Policy(GTP) (and the accompanying Renewable Energy Policy & Action Plan Roadmap) is a move towards the right direction that the government is serious in taking renewable energy policy to the next level (where Grid Parity will be the prime objective in the context of national renewable energy paradigm).

Legal Measure not the only Effective Tool

The proposed Renewable Energy Act (REA) may help drive national policies on renewable energies but it will not be effective in facilitating such a drive unless due attention is also given to tax matrix as an effective tool apart from other related legal instruments or even the proposed Renewable Energy Act(REA).

GST and Green Technology and Energy

With reference to the imminent enforcement of GST, it can be seen that no attention has been given to the tax consideration as an effective tool in facilitating the pickup rate and public acceptance of green energy and related green technologies.

Tax Treatment of Green Technology and Energy

Usage of ‘green technologies’ will still be subject to the same tax liabilities and subsequent tax treatment(notwithstanding certain tax exemptions granted for specified R&D subject matter). Up to now, there is no indication at all from the government that the usage, promotion and implementation of green technologies and energy will not be treated differently from the tax liability aspect.

Tax as Another Effective Base Instrument

Hence, in order to achieve an integrated approach in finding a viable energy solution to the green technology and adoption of renewable energy equation, the tax component must be taken into serious account.

Tackle the Job Market This Fall

Disappointing as it may be, many college graduates are faced with the hunt for full time employment after a summer of temporary employment amid hours of permanent job searches. The beginning of fall can be a difficult time for students who graduated in May or June. Although many had summer jobs, it is the first time in their lives they are faced with uncertainty about the future. Most students have student loans and many are living at home with no alternative. In the academic year 2007-8, over 86% of students graduating with Bachelor’s degree borrowed money to pay for their undergraduate education, according to FinAid. And according to a recent Baltimore Sun article on life after college, 80% of graduating seniors move home at least until they have found some type of permanent employment. Now is not the time to despair and decide to give up on the college education and tremendous experience you have earned. Instead, you can take these steps and rejuvenate as you approach the job market with a new and updated plan.

First, take the time to reflect upon your job hunting strategy and determine why you still have not found the right job. One reason is some graduates still have not focused their efforts or really know what it is they want to do for the next few years. If you take a little time to determine what companies you have spoken to and what information your research has provided you with, you can focus on careers and jobs that are hiring, paying well, considering new graduates and meet your criteria as a potential employer. This will allow you to target the companies you would consider working for and the types of job you would consider working at to build experience for the future. Once you weed out the companies you are not interested in working for and focus on an evoked set of companies, you will be confident in your interviews and willing to accept the position should the job be offered.

Second, remember it is a new season and time to start fresh in your job search again. Take out the fall clothes, put on a fresh face and meet the challenge with a positive attitude and confidence. Remember, you earned a college degree in a very competitive environment and you are prepared to work and take the opportunity to help a company grow. At this point, you must remember whether you are interviewing or submitting your resume and cover letter, you should focus on what you can bring to the company. This means providing concrete facts on your willingness to spend hours building relationships with customers or working extra hours to meet deadlines and working on team projects to get the job done. The company needs to know how you intend to help them meet their goals and objectives. This is especially true of marketing and sales jobs.

Finally, as you are searching and interviewing, you can also register for additional classes or take an extra course in an area you may consider a weakness. This will serve to keep your resume updated and your skills current. If you need to practice a computer skill or become more adept at a language then go ahead and register for a course and be sure to add the fact that you are taking the class to your resume or cover letters to potential employees. Today you have the flexibility of both on campus and on-line classes so there is little excuse for hesitation or procrastination.

As in sales, it just takes one right match or one yes and you will be employed. In the meantime, be persistent, assertive, and confident and above all, keep up the job search. The good news is that when with a focus on the type of company you want to work for and the type of job you want to do, when you finally get the job it will be worth the work to get it. After all, you earned it.

They Want to Suck Your Blood: Blood Thirsty Bugs and Eco-Friendly Ways to Get Rid of Them

Year round there are several types of bugs that really “bug” us with harmful and hurtful bites. How can we protect our family and homes from these creepy crawly blood sucking bugs using natural and environmentally friendly methods and treatments?

“Sleep tight don’t let the bedbugs bite,” for years parents have been saying this in jest when they tuck their children in at night. But with the current infestation of bedbugs in homes, hotels, colleges and public places it is no joking matter. Bedbugs come out at night while we are sleeping. It only takes about 10 minutes for a bedbug to full up and it won’t need to eat again for days. Female bed bugs lay 3-4 eggs every day near where we sleep, since human blood is their favorite treat. Bedbugs are flat, oval and reddish brown in color and are about .2 inches long, wingless and flat.

Find out how to how to tell if bedbugs are living in your home.

Mosquito “bites” aren’t really bites at all. It is actually a “poke”. Female mosquitoes need a good hearty meal before they lay their eggs and they can live up to eight weeks. Men are a less hearty specimen and only live about a week.

So why do some people get bit by mosquitoes and others don’t? Mosquitoes and many other blood sucking creatures are attracted to the carbon dioxide that a host releases and they are attracted to it like bees to honey. Find out more good, bad and just the facts about mosquitoes.

Horseflies: Regular houseflies hopped up on steroids! While the name is dead on when it comes to size, horseflies actually prefer to dine on cattle. Brown and black rate among their favorite colors in cattle, horses and the occasional person. Female horseflies are real ladies, they only dine on blood when they are about to lay eggs. Don’t think just because you aren’t on a ranch or farm that you are safe from “horse fly” bites, because they can also be found wherever there is standing water like a pond, swamp, stream, or lake. They love to breed under these conditions. Find out more about the dreaded horsefly.

Fleas come in different varieties. Where I live cat fleas are the most common, but they aren’t picky here, they will suck the blood of dogs or people too. Did you know that fleas can jump the length of a cat’s tail? They move easily through their host’s hair because of their flat bodies and while adult fleas eat blood, a baby fleas first meal is grown up flea poop.

Lice; is a word that makes parents all over cringe in disgust. None of us want to admit that our child has lice, but it does happen. Children most often transfer lice through wearing each other’s hats, hair bows or by using each other’s brushes. Lice can’t jump, hop or fly, so the only way they can transfer to another host is by crawling and then “landing” on a nice juicy scalp. Just because you have lice doesn’t mean you have dirty hair, believe it or not they actually prefer clean scalps to dine from.

Ticks, the headless monster that is not only annoying, but in some cases can give its host a harmful disease. No true head, they actually just have a small barbed mouth that they stick into their host. Ticks are particularly hard to get rid of once they are in the skin because they create cement like substance to glue themselves on and aren’t released until their stomachs are full.

To go green when you see red in your home consider these eco-friendly alternatives to pest control:

Bed bugs: Turn the suction on the sucker . . . vacuum! Be sure to get in and around the edges and corners of your mattress and box springs. Heat treatments, done by professionals are yet another way of effectively eradicating bedbugs from the bedroom (and any other room in the house). Professionals come in with high intensity heaters that kill not only live bugs but the eggs that other cleaning methods may leave behind. There are also products by Mother Earth and Kleen Free available in powder and spray form that can be used on beds, bedding, and clothing safely.

Mosquitoes:Naturally Repel Mosquitoes with These 5 Plants suggests specific plants to include in your outdoor garden that naturally repel mosquitoes. Other methods to naturally repel mosquitoes naturally from your environment include using vinegar, or oil of eucalyptus, watching how you dress, and even what you eat.

Horseflies: Of course, nothing beats covering up your skin, but on a hot summer day that is easier said than done. “Dressage Today” magazine offers a homemade fly repellent recipes using 2 cups of apple cider vinegar; 2 cups prepared tea that has gone cold (sage or chamomile is recommended); 20 drops of eucalyptus oil; 20 drops of citronella oil; 10 drops of lavender oil; 10 drops of tea tree oil; 10 drops of cedar oil; and 20 drops of an emulsifier (an example is polysorbate 20).

Fleas: These five steps offer home and pet owners natural ways to fight the small but mighty flea and take you through the
process from carpets to pets. Some important ingredients to have on hand include vinegar, olive oil lemon juice and garlic.Exterminate fleas naturally using Eucalyptus leaves, tansy, cedar chips and even Dawn dishwashing liquid – it’s not just for oily birds.

Lice: School aged children are the ones most likely to be exposed to lice in most households. Use these tips to help you check your child’s head for lice. There is a non-chemical way to treat your family should you have an infestation of lice. Try any one of these natural remedies that include mayonnaise, vinegar, special comb and tweezers or you can try using Vinegar (Dissolves eggs), Olive Oil or Baby Oil and a Knid Comb. Start with an olive or baby oil coating on your hair. Some say to leave it on overnight, others say a couple of hours. Use a shower cap to keep it on your hair and not any place else. Afterwards, wash your hair using vinegar and comb thru your hair small sections at a time using the Knid Comb.

Ticks: Try one of these home remedies for ridding your lawn of ticks. Preventing ticks on your pet or person is the first step towards protecting yourself from bites and the harmful effects of a tick bite. This guide to organic pest control can help you with a number of pest remedies and alternatives from using eucalyptus leaves or lavender.

Why use eco-friendly pest control methods?

In a joint statement, the CDC and EPA said: “Although bed bugs may sometimes be controlled by non-chemical means alone, this approach is often very difficult, potentially less effective, and usually more resource intensive.” Even in the CDC an EPA statement, chemicals are the last item on the list which includes: “using monitoring devices, removing clutter where bed bugs can hide, applying heat treatment, vacuuming, sealing cracks and crevices to remove hiding places, using non-chemical pesticides (such as diatomaceous earth) and judicious use of effective chemical pesticides.” Consider this; what you use to rid yourself of these pests can stay with your home, the air you breathe, and your skin for some time to come.

Find out more about the advantages of natural remedies for your children and home.

While most of these pests really bug us, in most cases (certainly not all) the effects of being “bit” but one of these are nothing more than an irritation. However, the long term effects of using harmful chemicals and toxins can last a great deal longer, both to the environment and to your health.

Thrifty Summer Fun for the Kids

If you have young kids, summer time can often means hot weather and bored kids. Many people can’t afford to go to amusement parks, water parks or send the kids to camp. These are some ideas to get your kids out of the house for free or almost free.

Story Time

Beat the heat and get inside with a fun and educational story time. Barnes and Noble is one bookstore that has free story time. Programs may vary by location. However, at my location, several stories are read, questions are asked and kids are provided with crayons and coloring sheets. Go to the stores and events tab to see if your store has a story time. For older kids, there is also a program where kids read eight books and get a free book. Simply download a “passport” and turn it in to a local Barnes and Noble when your child is finished with the books.

Borders is another store that has free story time. At my Borders, the story time is geared towards toddlers. There is a fun story, various activities and fun little surprises. Check the store locator to find a store near you and see the type of story time that is offered.

If you don’t have a Borders or Barnes and Noble, check out your local library or bookstore. I’m sure you will find that most libraries offer a program.

Inflatable Pool

If you are lucky enough to have a pool, that is great. However, if you don’t an inflatable pool is a wonderful option. My daughter loves our inflatable pool. We have one big enough to sit in and splash around a little. Try the Intex Swim Center Round Pool. It costs just under $25.00 and provides fun for the entire summer. If you want something more exciting, consider the Intex Waterfall Shade Play Center. It has a mini waterfall and inflatable slide. This one costs $34.99. Both can be found at target.com.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is a great way to bring your child closer to God while letting them have fun with other kids. A lot of them have themes like “Journey Through Egypt” or “God Squad.” Most of these are free or may have a small cost. Even though these are free, it is always nice to donate money, resources or time to help out the church effort. Here is a list of VBSs in North Carolina, Oklahoma, Virginia, Southern California, Rapid City, South Dakota, Missouri, Indiana and New York. If you don’t see a list in your area, call your local church to see if they are having a Vacation Bible School.

Museums

Take advantage of the many free museums and museums that offer free days. Again, it’s a good way to get out of the heat and learn something as well. Go to freemuseums.org for a list of free museums in some major US cities.

======= THOUSANDS of YEARS=======

God is everywhere, He is in your room, car or where ever you are, or have been or going to be. You can not hide from God, God made everything by the Word, the heavens, the earth and also He made hell.

People think that the devil made hell, wrong, God did and hell is the place where the devil will go and his followers at the end of the age.

We all have choices, do we choose to follow evil ways or do we follow God’s Word, God’s Word came alive and His name is Jesus.

God will never force Himself onto us but the devil will, God requires us to follow Him and His Word who is Jesus came to show us the way back to the Father.

Jesus should be everything to us, He has already paid the price for our salvation, we can be set free from our burdens and worries and sicknesses.

God did let many people be destroyed because of their wickeness as they drifted away from Him, but He sent His only Son to earth to show us the way back to Him.

What we must remember is that the whole Bible is God’s word and it is His word that is holding the world together, without the word the world would fall apart.

Just think how God must be feeling to see His creation being destroyed by man who was created in His own image.
Man has been living for thousands of years and all that he has done is to mess up the world that God made so perfect for us, its only the last 50 years or so that man now is trying to save the world from destruction, is it too late now for anything to be done, as Jesus will be coming back soon to rescue His own.

We try to live a good life but there are many distractions that come at us and we drift away from God, and we end up all washed up on the rocks and become like wrecks.

But Jesus is waiting for us to turn away from our ways, He is the way to eternal life and for us to be with our Heavenly Father.
We can be very troubled with our every day situations, we can change them with the choices we make, we do not have to follow other ways when we know that there is a better way to follow, and that way is to follow the Word of God.

Jesus said that “..He is the way, the truth, the life, and no one can come to the Father except through me.”

So why not follow Him (Jesus), yes He is the door way so lets go through.

Timeless Love Songs: Top Ten

Karaoke is a great pastime. It’s fun to do, and it’s even funnier to watch. But what can that little machine help you say to your loved one? Picking the right song can be everything, so let’s not start with ‘Should I stay or Should I go Now?’ How do you pick out a good love song? Well, as it happens, I have a list of love songs that should do just the trick.

10. I Walk the Line, By Johny Cash. This one doesn’t have to be a guy or a girl singing, so it’s a great romantic song.

9. When You Say You Love Me, By Josh Gromban. Again, this song could be sung by either sex, and it’s so gooey, it’s almost unbearable.

8. You Went and Saved The Best For Last, By Venessa Williams. Of course, this a strictly female vocal preformance, but it’s still a great song.

7. You Save Me And I Will Save The Day, by Train. This one’s equally a male vocal preformance only, but it’s a great song for the guy who wants to say it right.

6. I Drove All Night, by Celine Dion. Don’t be put off guys, you could sing this one too, it’s got a great lyric story.

5. Truly Madly Deeply, by Savage Garden. Yep, it’s still here, and it’s still one of the steamest songs out there.

4. Your Body Is A Wonderland, By John Mayer. This one’s for guys only, but it really gets you going.

3. I Want To Hold Your Hand, by the Beatles. Duh, everyone could have seen that one coming. The Beatles were going to be on here somewhere.

2. Delirous Love, by Neil Diamond. This is good one guys, I’m telling you.

1. Please Forgive Me, by Bryn Adams. Hands down, this is the most romantic pop song ever, don’t try and deny it. And yeah, a girl can sing it too.

Notes; You’ll notice a lack of hip hop and rap in the above list; that’s because your’s truly still doesn’t believe ‘phat’ ‘fly’ and ‘shorty’ are compliments. Other than that guys and dolls, have at it, good luck, and don’t go on to American Idol with one of these karaoke songs unless you aim to be humiliated.

Surgeon General Recommended You Walk a Minimum of 10,000 Steps a Day or Five Miles Per Day

Although the Surgeon General recommended you walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day or five miles per day, not everyone can do it because of pre-existing health issues. And some of those health issues might be due to advanced age, various illnesses, or even from leading a sedentary lifestyle, according to an October 20, 2009 news report from TrekDesk, a company that has come up with a new solution for sedantary employees–a workstation at your desk where you can walk as you work.

While the healthcare debate rages on there is a means for you to take personal control over your health. You don’t have to leave the office or home to do it. If you sit in chairs during the day, you might appreciate learning about the new idea of desk treadmills. See the new Treadmill Desk video on trekking at your desk.

Sedentary desk jobs are robbing adults of their health and are one of the leading causes of rising adult obesity rates, now at 18.7% according to the Centers for Disease Control. Only clean-air Colorado’s obesity rate is the lowest in the nation, but what happened in Colorado now is that it has shown the fastest percentage gain than any state with the exception of Virginia in the past 15 years.

If you can’t get outside to walk because of polluted air, traffic, or a sedentary desk job, perhaps walking at your desk might help. TrekDesk offers the first affordable solution that gets employees up and moving, garnering national attention at a time when health care costs and obesity rates are spiraling out of control.

Benefits derived by walking during work hours along with the agencies that published the studies:

33-70% reduction in the rates of most cancers (National Institutes of Health)
90% reduction in the number of initial heart attacks (American Heart Association)
50% reduction in the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes (American Diabetes Association)
70% reduction in the risk of stroke (American Heart Association)

Nearly 2/3 of our nation’s population is overweight with 50% of this number classified clinically obese. At a time when our nation is turning their attention to health care reform a few strong voices are rallying the cry for workplace and lifestyle reform as a critical piece of the puzzle.

A company known as TrekDesk has designed and is currently selling a unique, affordable solution that has been proven to help employees lose weight, restore health, prevent disease, improve mood and boost productivity: all without ever leaving the office. The only issue is that you need a treadmill in the first place. TrekDesk is a full sized, height adjustable work station which attaches to existing treadmills allowing employees the opportunity to walk slowly while they work without sweating.

Sound bizarre? The human body has evolved with the ability to walk 30 miles per day and its internal health systems are dependent upon walking to keep it in top form. Most American walk on average only 2 miles per day not allowing the body to maintain health or proper weight levels. Sedentary jobs and lifestyles are the main culprit and treadmill desks offer an solution.

Treadmill desks are already in use by major corporations such as GlaxoSmithKline, Humana, Mutual of Omaha and Best Buy however their average cost ranges between $4500-$6500, well beyond the budget of most companies and individuals. TrekDesk however costs less than 1/3 of an average monthly health insurance premium. Priced at $479, TrekDesk is currently shipping free through out the United States.

The health benefits of walking during the day are backed by years of solid medical evidence. Here are some interesting statistics on the benefits derived by walking during work hours along with the agencies that published the studies:

33-70% reduction in the rates of most cancers (National Institutes of Health)
90% reduction in the number of initial heart attacks (American Heart Association)
50% reduction in the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes (American Diabetes Association)
70% reduction in the risk of stroke (American Heart Association)

The National Institutes of Health reports that 84% of ALL medical claims are the direct result of a lack of exercise and poor diet/lifestyle choices. Obesity related claims are costing our health care system in excess of $100 Billion annually. References to the medical reports proving the health benefits of treadmill desks can be found at the TrekDesk website.

Heeding the Surgeon General’s recommendations to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps or about 5 miles per day would have a dramatic impact on the nation’s health reform landscape. TrekDesk allows employees to meet this goal in as little as 2.5-3 hours per day while they work.

Due to being sedentary and seventyish, I walked a slow, 13,114 regular steps today along the curb as many of the streets in my neighborhood have few sidewalks. And my Omron pedometer noted that I walked 4.13 miles, 7,772 aerobic steps, and burned 228 calories. The heavy traffic along the street felt threatening, even though the newspaper said the air quality today was good.

Inspite of the muddy curbs and teenage males followed by younger kids on bikes riding on the sidewalk not in the bike lane, tailgaiting me when the few narrow sidewalks became available, the walk had very good results. My back pain from usually sitting up to12 hours a day in front of a computer is gone.

Whatever you choose, treadmill, walking outside, or the safer way, walking through indoor shopping malls, get moving for your health, if your doctor advises you to walk for exercise. Shopping mall walking also is a good way to walk without breathing in the heavy traffic pollution as you walk along the curb where there are no sidewalks.

You could join a gym, go to the “Y,” link up with a community center’s walking program, take a chair exercise course, or solve your walking issues at home or at work with a treadmill that you can use at your desk, maybe even create a cleaner environment with an air purifier as you walk indoors.

Thailand's Loi Krathong and Yi Peng Festivals - Floating Festivals of Lights

Loi Krathong is the largest annual festival held throughout Thailand and one in which almost every Thai participates.

Traditionally it is held on the night of the full moon in the 12th month of the lunar calendar, however with the full moon this year falling on a Wednesday, many Loi Krathong festivals will commence on November 8th to take advantage of the weekend.

The current format of the festival is believed to have originated in the ancient Thai capital of Sukothai, but now most cities throughout Thailand celebrate Loi Kathong, with those in Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya being particularly well known and spectacular.

The Thai word “Loi” means “to float”, while “Krathong” is a raft about a handspan in diameter traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk, although today specially made bread “flowers” or even Styrofoam may be used.

As part of the celebrations beauty contests, called “Noppamas Queen Contests”, are also generally staged, with the name being attributed to a consort of the 14th century Sukothai king Loethai.

Ordinary Thai people decorate their Krathongs with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, and incense sticks. Some people also include small clippings of their hair or finger nails.

Government departments, private corporations and other organisations build much larger and more elaborate rafts as part of Loi Kathong contests, which are usually accompanied by spectacular fireworks displays, musical performances and other festive activities.

Some Thais believe the festival is meant to worship Buddha’s footprint on the banks of the Narmada River, while others say that it is to pay respect to Phra Uppakhut, one of Buddha’s great disciples.

In addition to showing great respect to Buddha, the act of floating Krathongs on rivers, canals or any other body of water symbolises letting go of grudges, problems, and anger so that one can start life afresh.

Many Thais also believe that floating a Krathong at this time honours the Goddess of Water, “Phra Mae Khongkha” and will bring them good luck and fortune in the year ahead.

Others believe it expresses apologies to “Khongkha” or”Ganga”, the River Goddess.

Any visitor to Thailand during the month of November cannot help but be caught up in this nation-wide celebration.

Chiang Mai Loi Krathong and Yi Peng Festivals
One of the largest and most colourful Loy Krathong ceremonies is held in the Northern Thailand city of Chiang Mai, where it coincides with the Lanna Yi Peng Festival.

This year the festival will be held between November 11 and 13 and feature bamboo raft and boat races on the Mae Ping River, a Yi Peng lantern procession, a beauty contest, a parade of giant Krathongs, and nightly fireworks displays and cultural performances.

An added feature of the Chiang Mai Mai Loi Krathong Festival is the Yi Peng Festival (Festival of Lights), a unique traditional practice of Chiang Mai locals, Lanna people, held at the same time.

Commonly called Sky Lanterns, the festival involves the launching skywards of thousands of tubular lantern hot air balloons called “Khome Loi” as an offering to Buddha and to cast away grief, misery and ill-fortunes.

The lanterns are constructed using traditional bamboo formed into hoops and then coated with either tracing paper or Saa Paper made from the branches and leaves of the mulberry tree.

A small candle placed in the base provides the hot air to fill the paper envelope and float the lantern gently skywards.

In addition to the renowned Chiang Mai celebrations, notable Loi Krathong Festivals will also be held at:

Sukhothai Loi Krathong Festival – between November 7th to 12th 2008 at the Sukhothai Historical Park.

Highlights include worshipping ceremonies to “Phra Mae Ya” and King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, cultural arts and traditional Thai musical performances, a beauty contest, the lighting of lanterns, “Khao Khwan Wan Len Fai” ceremony, as well as a light and sound presentation at Wat Mahatat.

Bangkok Loi Krathong Festival – between November 8th and 12th 2008 at Santi Chai Prakarn, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok.

Highlights include a river procession of giant Krathongs, and the illumination of buildings and historical sites on both sides of the Chao Phraya River.

Tak Loi Krathong Festival – between November 8th and 12th 2008

Highlights include an invitation parade of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Royal lamps, the Royal Krathong, a beauty pageant and a light and sound spectacular on the Mae Ping River.

Bang Sai Loi Krathong and Tam Prathip Festivals – between November 11 and 13th, 2008 at the Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre, Phra Nakhon, Si Ayutthaya.

Highlights include a traditional procession of beauty queens from all four regions and a floating market demonstration.

Three Foods that Lower High Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a problem for many people in this day and age. While there are many excellent medications to help lower high cholesterol, there are also many foods that can be worked into ones diet to either lower high cholesterol or prevent it from occurring in the first place. This guide covers three of these foods that are suggested by the Mayo Clinic.

High Cholesterol Reducing Food #1: Oatmeal

The first food to reduce your high cholesterol is one that you can begin your day with. While oatmeal itself can be bland, you can add healthy fruit such as bananas and apples or healthy spices such as cinnamon to enhance the flavor. For some really fancy and healthy ideas check out these recipes from Quaker. According to the Mayo Clinic the main benefit of oatmeal is that it is high in soluble fiber which reduces high cholesterol. So, start your day with a bowl of oatmeal and help lower your high cholesterol.

High Cholesterol Reducing Food #2: Almonds or Walnuts

The second food to reduce your high cholesterol is nuts such as almonds and walnuts. According to the Mayo Clinic these nuts are high in polyunsaturated fats and help to keep blood vessels healthy. Almonds and Walnuts can either make a healthy and filling snack or be added to other foods such as salads for some added flavor. If you are looking for some ideas for using almonds in food check out these recipes. If you are on a low sodium diet you should check to see if the almonds and walnuts you buy are salted, but otherwise this is a great food to lower high cholesterol.

High Cholesterol Reducing Food #3: Fish or Fish Oil

The third food to reduce your high cholesterol is a little different because it can either be taken as actual food or as a suppliment. Fish are high in Omega 3 fatty acids which help to reduce high cholesterol. According to the Mayo Clinic doctors recommend eating fish twice a week for its health benefits. One thing to watch out for if you buy your fish frozen is that it might contain a lot of sodium. If you can, get your fish fresh and then prepare it in a manner that does not involve frying. For some delicious recipes with fish to lower your high cholesterol check out these recipes. If you can not work fish into your diet through meals, you may want to try fish oil capsules. They are easy to take but be warned that they can leave a fishy after taste. Whichever way you use fish to lower your high cholesterol you will be doing something healthy to improve your diet and your life.

Conclusion

Reducing your high cholesterol is one of the best things you can do to enhance your health and life expectancy. If you are concerned about your blood pressure then you should consult a doctor or other health professional to see if you need medication. If you are trying to be proactive or already are being treated for high blood pressure, the foods that have been covered in this guide may be of benefit to you.

Tips for Planning an Inexpensive Family Vacation

The Art of the CFV (Cheap Family Vacation)

Rather than boring you with all the steps and tips of how to plan a CFV, take a look at how I roll with my family of five, without taking out a HELOC.

I have been lauded by the woman whose opinion matters most (my wife, not Oprah) as the cheapest man on the planet. I have a few grown-up toys, but have mysteriously survived without a boat, a pickup, or an ATV. I am not an impulse buyer, unless something purchased with between three and six months of thought is considered an impulse.

For this reason, I am the vacation planner. She decides where we would go (since otherwise we would never go anywhere), and it becomes my job to plan it. I do occasionally throw a few ideas her way, but I don’t even have veto power once she has made up her mind.

So, after much deliberation, I purchased a family-sized tent, one that could easily be set up in the dark, for just over $75. It came with two extra sleeping bags, a couple of canvas chairs, and some miscellaneous camping stuff. I spent a few hours net-surfing, and e-mailing some old military friends.

The next day we loaded ourselves into the car – me and all the women in my life. Three daughters, 13, 9, and 7, crammed into the family sedan with a full tank of gas. I headed north, with my wife reading the map, mostly so I could drive her bananas when I try to read it and drive at the same time. We made a beeline for central Missouri, where an old friend was expecting us. He didn’t have the room to board us, but this was deliberate. We set up the tent in his front yard. My wife got some video of my friend and I trying to set it up while the girls watched. We all laughed until our sides hurt.

After a less than restful night, we headed down an intentional detour to a place called Tightwad, MO. There isn’t much of anything there other than a city limit sign, which happens to be chained and welded to the pole to prevent theft. Okay, other than its symbolic value, that’s pretty boring. But over the next thirteen days, we forged our way through five more states, finding all sorts of cheap stuff to do.

Here’s some of what we saw:
The Bridges of Madison County, IA ($3 for parking)
The Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD (a few dollars for all of us)
Badlands National Park ($20) (It’s a huge bunch of rocks that you can climb on)
1880 Town ($26) (a reconstructed old west town, we spent all afternoon there)
Mt. Rushmore ($20)
Panning for gold near Rushmore ($20, and it was so cold it wasn’t that fun)
Crazy Horse Mountain ($20)
Devil’s Tower (Free if you don’t get too close)
Yellowstone Park ($25)
Garden of the Gods in Co. Springs (Free)
The Oz Museum in Wamego, KS ($28)

Over the next thirteen days, between the campgrounds and two nights at friends’, we spent only six of those nights in a motel, and if the weather had held out, we would have done less. Meals were sandwiches packed in a cooler (we stopped for groceries a few times), and one real meal a day was eaten at an all-day breakfast joint. At the time of the trip, the average price of gasoline was $3.19.

You may start to see a pattern emerging here. Not a one of these attractions cost more than $30, and many of them much less. Almost everything we saw involved getting the kids out of the car, and letting them run until they dropped. We connected with several old friends along the way, and each night, we planned a few activities for the following day, but left time open for wandering.

We spent a total of $1800, and that included the tent, which we still have. All three children got to make some choices, and this year, they are helping to plan the stops, and trying to figure out how to do more for less. They are, in fact, competing to see who can come up with the neatest “free” thing to do, and learning important life lessons in the process. The most important thing, though, is we proceeded at a pace that was quite relaxed. We did what we wanted to do, and stayed within our budget. That’s what a vacation is all about.

1 Minute Makeover

Everyone wants a makeover. We all see the television shows that show dramatic differences in the before and after pictures. Not everyone will have these kinds of results. However, makeovers can make anyone look more alive and stylish. Unfortunately we don’t have the time and the money to get a makeover every few years. Instead, it is your job to make sure you always look your best. If you need some quick tips to look your best, here are some 1 minute makeover ideas.

Stand Up Straight
Slouching is a terrible habit many people in this world do. The shoulders sag forward while our belly hangs out and our head droops low. If you pull your shoulders back, and tighten your stomach muscles, you will not only support your back more, but also lose a visual 10 pounds. Posture can do a lot for your image.

Bra Straps
We all get into the habit of simply wearing bras that are comfortable and may not give us enough support. Breasts begin to sag and make us look heavy and old. A quick, 20 second fix is to shorten your bra straps ½ inch on both sides. This will give you a perkier look.

Flip Your Hair
When hair is left down, it tends to get heavier and flatter throughout the day. If you have an important meeting, you can easily liven up your hairdo by flipping your head upside down and massaging the roots for 20 seconds. You will be amazed how much body and bounce can be added by doing this simple trick.

Cheek Color
Whether you wear make up or not, adding color to your cheeks can do wonders for a personal makeover. Color makes us look younger, healthier, and more alive. If your makeup has faded during the day, or if you simply did not put on makeup in the morning, there is a trick you can do. Simply, pinch the apples of your cheeks a couple of times. This will give you a natural cheek glow.

Not everyone can be beautiful on the outside, but everyone can be beautiful on the inside. If you have confidence, people will look right past your physical features and focus on your thoughts and mind. However, if you would like to make more of a visual impression on your audience, try these simple 1 minute makeover tricks the next time you are caught in a bind.

Why Parents of Young Black Boys Should Consider Alternate Education Methods

A recent report revealed that young black boys may be in a worse place academically than previously feared. According to the New York Times, “An achievement gap separating black from white students has long been documented – a social divide extremely vexing to policy makers and the target of one blast of school reform after another. But a new report focusing on black males suggests that the picture is even bleaker than generally known.”

The article goes on to explain the severe divide between education the educational outcome of black boys when compared to white boys and adds that income is not necessarily a good indicator when determining success or failure. It adds that the only way progress has been made is through personal investment of educators to the point of knocking on doors of students who miss school.

Meanwhile, an Atlanta Post article accuses the nation of ignoring the real problem. The author points to the success of Geoffrey Canada, of the Harlem Children’s Zone whose school provides smaller class sizes, mandates uniforms, fosters parent involvement, and enforces longer school hours. While the article mentions that an Afrocentric education might be useful because “people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds learn differently”, observation indicates that nothing motivates the African American male child better than one-on-one attention.

If Baltimore City Schools can raise graduation rates and lower drop out rates by having long school days and giving students mentors, something has to said for the power or relationship and the education of young black boys. If Mr. Canada can transform high school and college graduation rates in Harlem by being attentive and creating relationships with students, then something must be said about inspiring students to learn. If Ron Clark can turn disadvantaged students into academic superstars with creative teaching methods, then something must be said for adjusting the curriculum to fit the needs of the child. If all of these successes cannot be spread to all schools, then parents need to take these lessons and apply them to their own students themselves.

For the parent of a young black boy who is quickly becoming a statistic, if you don’t have resources provided by the likes of Geoffrey Canada and and Ron Clark, it makes sense to look at the option of one-on-one education through homeschooling, tutoring, and private school sources.

New York City Safety: How Women Can Stay Safe in the Big Apple

Many women are apprehensive about traveling alone, especially in big cities. Even New York City can be safe if you use common sense. Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, these tips will help you stay safe day and night.

1).Be smart about your valuables. Do not leave valuables out in the open. If you are walking in the city, leave valuables back at the hotel. Do not assume that because the hotel is locked, your items are safe. Leave them in a locked box or safe. Additionally, avoid wearing flashy jewelry if possible. Try not to carry too much cash on you, and if you do, never have it visible outside.

2). Avoid dark alleys and stick within crowds. There is power with numbers. Walking with or even behind a group of people at intersections or streets is safer than walking alone. Keep your head held high and look people in the eye. Criminals are less likely to grab your purse or belongings if they think you might be able to describe them to police later. Try to carry a small handbag instead of a long shoulder purse-they tend to be shorter and hug closer to your body for added protection. Better yet, if you are with someone, hold your purse in between you and the other person.

3). Know your neighborhoods and be safe at night. Try not to draw attention to yourself as a tourist. Look at maps inside buildings as opposed to outside. Generally speaking, Manhattan is safe and offers lots of tourist attractions. Central Park is also safe during the day, but avoid it at night. It is best to avoid walking alone at night period. Use cabs whenever possible at night and be sure to get in a marked cab. If there are no available cabs, walk near others and stick to the middle of the sidewalk at a medium-fast pace.

4). Be prepared. If you are truly concerned with safety, wear boots and a long coat. The boots will help if you need to kick a possible attacker, and a long coat can hide any nice jewelry. Additionally, objects such as sharp keys or a cell phone are within grasp in deep pockets. Do not wear headphones or text while walking. Keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Which is the Greater Influence the Internet or the Parent?

Is it possible that the ways and thinking of the young in your family are more of an influence of the internet than of their parent? Is your child spending more time online . . . friendster . . . multiply . . . myspace . . . youtube . . . facebook . . . and so on . . . but lesser time with Mom . . . Dad . . . family?

Introduction

Over the past 10 years parents have been forced to deal with the overabundance of new media such as the Internet. Accustomed to media like television and radio where content access can reasonably be controlled or at least understood, parents have developed mediation techniques to help deal with unwanted content. But, given the expanding media environment afforded by the Internet and the lack of expertise being reported by parents, these mediation styles need to be examined in the context of online use.

Teens are now preferring the Internet to the telephone, and are increasingly seeking information online. Thus, it becomes very important for researchers to understand how content is being viewed and monitored in the home. Furthermore, with Internet use becoming bedroom accessible to youth, it now competes with traditional activities such as playing outside or family get-together. Thus, the scope of Internet mediation research now must extend to an investigation of general parenting styles and access location so that researchers can begin to understand how media such as the Internet are being integrated into everyday parenting situations.

The increasingly competitive economy is creating an environment where parents are forced to spend longer hours at work and fewer hours with their children. The internet and the media are bringing the outside world into homes. As a result, outside influences have greater access and influence over children than ever before.

If you are like most parents who cannot afford to decrease the amount of time at work in order to closely monitor your children’s activity, then it is safe to assume that quality of time you spend with your child is critical. What, then, are the steps you can learn to increase your influence over the negative effects of mass media, the internet and the rest of the outside world?

As we become the parent we deserve, it is very important that we provide wise parenting. By that I mean, we choose to provide supervision and support to help shape our child’s emotional, intellectual, psychological, and spiritual well-being, which the internet cannot give. A commonly used phrase, but one that has the ring of substantial truth, is that parent is a child’s first and foremost teacher. From birth to age eighteen, a child spends just a fraction of time in school. Therefore, it is not surprising that many factors outside the school environment can significantly influence a child’s prospect for academic success. Likewise, factors outside the home environment may empower or destroy the child. But, proper nurturing and encouragement liberates not limits, multiplies not divides the child’s chances of becoming a responsible person.

On the other hand, some of the same outside influences that can harm your child can be used to help your child. Get on the internet or stop by the book store to educate yourself about parenting. Learn the tools necessary to raise a happy, responsible and productive child in a loving, safe and nurturing environment. Other parents are terrific sources of support and ideas on parenting. Or contact a psychotherapist in your area who offers support groups, parenting classes and seminars. Be sure they are teaching useful parenting information.

World Travel of the Non-Traveler

I have seen the USA.

I’ve been to Pugkeepsie and even Macadoo.

Been to the Deltas and down to Bourbon Street.

I’ve walked the beaches.

The sand between my toes.

The hawk has bitten my fingers.

I’ve been though my height of snows.

Over and over again…

I wonder is it the same.

Does the rest of the world…

look like the USA?

Top 6 Facial Fillers

Facial fillers are gaining popularity among people who long to regain a youthful, vibrant appearance in their later years. In Long Beach facial fillers are becoming the solution for obtaining this youthful appearance, even if the results are only temporary. Take a look at the top 6 facial filler treatments in Long Beach, CA:

1. At the top of the list is Botox of course. Wrinkles and hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes someone to excessively sweat, can be successfully treated for up to 4 months. This Botulinum Toxin Type A filler is injected in the treated area and relaxes underlying muscles to create smooth skin with no downtime involved whatsoever. You can receive a Botox injection during your lunch break and immediately go back to work afterwards.
2. Another facial filler used by many people is Dysport. Dysport is another Botulinum Toxin Type A based injection. It is used to smooth out wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that cause deep wrinkles. Results also last approximately 4 months before another treatment becomes necessary.
3. Juvéderm is a very popular facial filler as well. This injectable gel made of hyaluronic acid adds volume to the area under wrinkles to “plump” them up so that they appear smooth. The results are immediate and last about 6 months.
4. Radiesse makes the list, too, which is no surprise. This facial filler stimulates your body’s natural production of collagen and adds instant volume to the facial tissue. What most people love about Radiesse is that the results usually last up to a year.
5. Another common facial filler is Restylane. Made from hyaluronic acid and containing no animal proteins, few people have allergic reactions to Restylane. Results last up to 6 months.
6. The way Sculptra works is very different from the other above mentioned facial fillers. Long Beach dermatologists use Sculptra because it gradually replaces lost volume in skin tissue. This allows you to be more discreet about your use of facial fillers, but more than one Sculptra treatment may be required for deeper wrinkles. Sculptra results last up to 2 years, which is another reason many people prefer it over the 5 facial fillers mentioned above.

The facial fillers Long Beach dermatologists use on their patients are quickly advancing and the number of available facial fillers is almost staggering. Since facial fillers are typically deemed a safe cosmetic treatment for people who don’t have existing medical conditions, Long Beach facial fillers are becoming quite popular indeed.
