10 Must-Have Wedding Dance Songs

Weddings are a fantastic opportunity for some dancing and grooving. But how can a person get all the guests out on the floor? By having the ultimate wedding playlist. At my own wedding, I had hours of music for the reception. However, there were definitely core songs that made the guests happy to boogie like none other. I can speak from personal experience that the following list contains more than enough dance-worthy jams to have everyone out and cutting the rug. They are must-haves for every dance party and especially for your wedding reception.

Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex – Recorded by a U.S. one-hit wonder band, this song is excellent for getting even reluctant dancers out on the floor. Cotton Eye Joe, recorded in 1994, is a line dance. Line dances are great because no one feels as if he or she sticks out and can relax. Besides, it will add a bit of variety to the usual dance music because it is full of the Down South sound.

September by Earth, Wind & Fire – This 1978 hit is super groovy. It sets me moving as soon as I hear it come on, every single time. Your guests, too, will try out their funkiest moves to this song.

U Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer – Yes, this is a very familiar and recognizable song from 1990, but that is for good reason. It is completely ridiculous but so much fun to dance to. Everyone knows Hammer’s particular dance steps, and some wedding guest who is not especially beset by shame will be certain to try them out.

Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) by C & C Music Factory – Another song from 1990, this triumph of a dance hit is a must-have on your playlist. It’s right there in the lyrics: “Everybody dance now!” means that everyone needs to get up and shake it for the world to see.

Let’s Groove by Earth, Wind & Fire – Maybe I shouldn’t have included two songs recorded by the same group, but a person just can’t go wrong with Earth, Wind & Fire. I insist that this 1981 song is necessary for your dance music playlist. It’s simple but very funky and fun. Once again, its lyrics invite your guests to “let this groove get you to move.” A good beat is important, but lyrics that firmly encourage attendees to boogie just add to the sound of your reception.

Funkytown by Lipps Inc – What fantastic dance party does not include some sort of disco? “Funkytown,” from 1980, is so amazing for filling that need. The song has two distinctive sections that pull the listener into dancing. Plus, while some extreme disco tends to alienate modern listeners, this one never goes out of style.

Love Shack by The B-52’s – A person simply cannot have a dance without involving this 1989 hit somewhere in the playlist. Everyone knows the lyrics and will sing along as they dance. Trust me, they will. They simply cannot help themselves.

Move This by Technotronic – Although this is not the most famous song by the Belgian band, I personally believe that it is one of their best. Especially for getting people to rock out, 1989 style. It also will add some variety to the playlist by adding that techno, electronic sound to the other, more pop pieces.

Electric Boogie by Marcia Griffiths – This song, also from 1989, is another line dance. However, it’s so different from Cotton Eye Joe that it won’t feel overworked by your guests. Still, it has the same benefits. Most people are familiar with the steps, or can learn quickly, and they won’t feel as if they look like freaks. They can be sure that they fit in with the group as they all follow along with the line dance.

Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman – Definitely much older than the other songs on the list, this 1936 swing piece cannot possibly be left out of your dance party. People who love to dance love to show off on good swing music. While I adore a lot of modern revival swing, I tend to prefer songs from the Golden Age of swing. This piece, though, will still be familiar to many of your guests because it is such a fantastic classic.

No matter what other songs you choose to include for your wedding reception, don’t forget to include these ten must-have songs. They will ensure that you have an excellent variety of styles and genres. More importantly, though, they will make sure that all of your guests get out on the floor at some point. It’s your day, but I’m sure you will want all of your guests to enjoy themselves, as well.

All of the above songs are available from Amazon.com for $.89-$1.29.

10 Must Have Items in Your Car for Winter

Most people keep ice scrapers and brushes in their cars for winter. That is a good start, but there are several more things that you should make sure that you have in your car. These are 10 of the essential items for your car in the winter.

Kitty litter

Kitty litter may seem unusual, but if your car is sitting outside in a snow storm while you are away from home, it can be a life saver. Unused kitty litter can be placed under and around your tires to help you gain traction in the snow and ice.

Shovel

A portable or collapsible shovel will come in handy for those times that the snow is too deep for the kitty litter by itself. The shovel will likely have a sharp edge too. This can come in handy if your car gets stuck in ice.

Blankets

No one wants to imagine getting stranded, but if you get stranded, you will want to have at least one blanket in the car with you. A blanket can be used in the case of either getting stranded on the side of the road to wait out the storm or in the case of an accident.

Flares

Flares can be seen in the snow or in normal road conditions. Flares can be used to let other drivers know you either need help or are stopped on the side of the road. If your car gets stuck in an isolated area, you will want flares to help mark your location.

Flashlights and Batteries

Flashlights are always essential and should be in your car all year. A flashlight can help you see at night if something happens on the car, a tire goes flat or if your car goes off the road. Batteries go together with the flashlights. Make sure the batteries are in date and the correct size.

AAA Membership

This can be an invaluable resource. Membership in AAA will provide you with emergency roadside assistance, towing and gas. The program has trucks available on call all the time.

Gas Can and money

An empty gas can will save you time and money if you ever get stranded without gas. You will be able to travel to the nearest gas station and get a couple of gallons of gas to help you make it to a gas station where you can fill up. You will also want to have about $5 hidden in the locked glove box for just such an emergency.

Matches or a lighter

This will help if you need to build a fire or light your flares. Matches, or a lighter, can also help melt snow or ice should you be stranded in your car.

Cell Phone and Charger

This should go without saying. Never leave your house without your cell phone and a charger that works in the car. This is especially true in the winter. If you have an accident, get lost or need help, you can use your cell phone in most places to quickly call for help.

Food

A small snack or other non-perishable food item should be kept in the car in case you get stranded somewhere. A box of granola bars, or something similar, would be perfect to keep under the seat or in a box in the trunk. That way if you are hungry, but it is safer to sit on the side of the road and wait for the storm to pass, you will be able to eat something.

10 Non-Gotcha Questions for Sarah Palin

When Katie Couric asked Sarah Palin to name the last book she’d read, she could not and later called Couric’s question a “Gotcha” question perpetrated by a sneaky, conniving journalist. While in Boston on her One Nation bus tour, a reporter asked her what she would take away from her Boston stop-over, she launched into a diatribe of Paul Revere not recorded in our nation’s history books. Later when her answer seemed whacked, Palin claimed the reporter had surprised her with a “Gotcha” question.

So I have composed 10 easy, groundball questions that Palin may be able to answer without getting stumped.

  1. What is your name?

  2. Where were you born?

  3. What is your husband’s name?

  4. What are the names of your children?

  5. How long did you serve as Governor of Alaska?

  6. Are you an America citizen?

  7. What is your favorite color?

  8. Can you drive a car?

  9. What is your favorite food?

  10. Did you finish high school?

Please note that I tried to make these as easy to answer as possible and I did not ask if she finished college. Most people would be able to answer these with one or two words, but our future President (Palin) might still find a few “Gotcha” questions on the list. She likes to change the rules to fit her own brand of political etiquette.

Wouldn’t you like to see Palin in a televised debate with Romney or some other smart, educated Republican? However, I would think it would be too painful to ever witness her in a debate with a silver-tongued orator like Barack Obama. Let’s hope that is one debate we will never have to see. (“Gotcha!”)

10 Mother's Day Gifts for Moms Who Are Serious Gardeners

My Mother’s Day wish list of gardening needs is about as long as my arm. Since gardening supplies are never available in the winter for Christmas gift giving, we moms have to wait until Mother’s Day to get those wonderful gizmos, gadgets, and gardening bric-a-brac.

Garden tools and supplies have come a long way in the past 30 years, and today’s specialty gardening tools can really simplify those gardening chores. There’s really a fabulous selection of things for the garden, but these are my special picks for a Mother’s Day gift that a gardening Mom would enjoy.

Weatherproof Garden Tote

For the mother who totes her yard supplies around in an old bucket, this neoprene garden tote from the Gardener’s Supply Company (www.gardeners.com) is a classy way to store and carry small hand tools, seed packets, twine, and garden gloves. The tote measures 12″L x 6.5″ W x 10.25″H and is currently on sale at $19.99. Of course, I’d especially would be pleased if the tote came preloaded with new gloves, seed packets, and a decent garden trowel (since mine is missing, hint, hint, hint.)

Party of Pigs

Yard art really adds something to a low flower bed. These adorable party of pigs are colorful, folk art-ish hand painted steel porkers that measure 12 inches wide and 9 inches high. The complete party of pigs are $49.99 and also available online through the Gardener’s Supply company. This is one of those Mother’s Day gifts that will be enjoyed every time Mom steps out in her garden.

Hori Hori digging knife

The best gardening tool in the universe is the Hori Hori and is the one that I grab first when doing a little yard work. This Japanese digging knife is really a wicked looking 12″ knife with serrations on one side and a sharp edge on the other. The Hori Hori can be used for digging, cutting root balls and burlap, measuring, light pruning and more. The Hori Hori ranges in price from $19.99 to $34.95 and is available at all garden centers. The best of bunch however, is the Hori Hori by Joshua Roth which is currently listed on Amazon at $34.95. This is the model I own and it is really is superior to the rest.

Backpack garden sprayer

My mother-in-law received one of these 10 years ago as a Mother’s Day gift and has appreciated this item every time she has to spray her 400 plus roses. A backpack sprayer is one that straps to the back and allows Mom to spray hundreds of flowers without having to walk back and forth to the garden shed. These come in an assortment of sizes but either the two or three gallon version would probably be the best for Mom. Backpack garden sprayers are available at almost all gardening centers and seem to range in price between $25-$40.

Garden clogs

Garden clogs are slide on rubber clogs that look a little bit like those wildly popular kids crocs. These study garden shoes are easy for Mom to put on for a quick dash out to the yard when the dew is still heavy on the ground. They are also incredibly practical when stomping around flower beds and wash off clean as a whistle. Garden clogs can be found in all centering centers. Specialty nurseries seem to carry the premium brands which are priced between $30-50, with discount garden centers offering more modest lines priced between $20-30.

Rubber Irrigation boots

When I was a kid, my parents bought each of us kids a new pair of La Crosse rubber boots ever summer. These rubber irrigation boots are water tight and fabulous for working in compost heaps, turning over the vegetable garden, or walking through long, wet grass. Cabela’s offers an 18″ insulated La Crosse burly boot for $59.95. The best boot bargains however are still to be found at the old farm stores where a basic La Crosse can be purchased for $25 and less. It’s an odd little gift but one that is incredibly practical and will be very much appreciated.

Bypass pruner

For moms who have lots of roses or flowering shrubs, a bypass pruner is a professional grade pruner than can cut through branches up to one inches thick. It has high carbon, sword-steel blades, self oiling center bolt, precision spring, and grip proof handles. The bypass pruner is currently on sale for $31 at Smith & Hawken at www.smithandhawken.com.

Self watering window boxes

For those of us who like to place window boxes in hard to reach places, this 31″ waterless window box from Gardener’s Supply house has huge water reservoirs that keep the soil moist. An easy to read indicator tells you when the window box needs watering. These window boxes come in 4 different colors and are affordable priced at $34.95. I can see pairing up this gift with a bag of potting mix and several pony packs of Mom’s favorite flowers.

Vermont Garden Cart

Moms who do a lot of carrying around the yard might also appreciate a garden cart. This two wheeled tip carts are handcrafted in Vermont and can handle heavy loads with little effort. These garden carts range from $139 for the small carts and up to $209.00 for the large cart. These carts are available at cart.cartsvermont.com.

10 Movie Quotes that Move Me, Make Me Laugh or Bring Back Memories

A good movie quote is one that stands on its own. Adding context adds to its value but movies can’t be remembered in their entirety. So, I chose 10 movie quotes that do a good job of summing up something about a movie I love that once I think of the line, the movie comes rushing back. A few of these are included on the AFI’s 100 Greatest Movie Quotes and but the majority are overlooked gems.

1.Capote
2.Lost In Translation
3.Swingers
4.Office Space
5.Sunset Blvd.
6.When Harry Met Sally
7.Rocky
8.Under the Tuscan Sun
9.Monster Squad
10.Pulp Fiction

Truman Capote: (Phillip Seymour-Hoffman):“Ever since I was a child, folks have thought they had me pegged, because of the way I am, the way I talk. And they’re always wrong.”1

Several years ago I heard a movie was being made about Truman Capote and although I knew who he was, he seemed to be one of those writers you don’t meet until college if at all. Understanding that I started to read up on his very social life, the rivalry with Gore Vidal and his fatal alcoholism. He appeared to be an archetype. An artist who struggled with his public persona and his private one. The film Capote and this quote in particular captures the period he wrote “In Cold Blood” in such a quiet and heartbreaking way that it reveals some things about him that he himself could have never said. So much of who we are remains unnoticed and hidden for a reason. It seems that Truman Capote became aware of what happens when you are confronted with the darkest side of yourself.

Bob (Bill Murray): “The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you.”2

Lost in Translation was, for me, a ode to those who don’t know what they want from their lives. Charlotte, played by Scarlett Johansson, is 23, married, and in Tokyo with her husband when she meets Bob, an actor going through the motions of his has-been status doing commercials. They form an almost unbelievable friendship, trading barbs and wisdom, as a way to pass the time and stave off loneliness. There is such an urgency in this world to know what you want and to always be moving that to see things slowed down, like they are in this film was refreshing. For once the characters in a film were allowed to think about what they wanted and recognize that the journey and who they meet is more important that the goal itself.

Trent (Vince Vaughn): “Vegas, baby, Vegas!”3

Trent, played by Vince Vaughn, is the best and worst kind of friend wrapped into one. He can always be trusted to get you into some kind of trouble but will stand by you until you’re out of it. The main character in Swingers played by Jon Favreau is in a romantic rut and Trent decides nothing cures ex-girlfriend blues like a trip to Las Vegas. Their trip didn’t turn out how they hoped it would be. However, that’s the lure of Las Vegas; anything is possible. Even though I yet to win the jackpot, Las Vegas will always represent that bit of escapism you need when life is becoming too stale.

Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston): “I don’t like my job, and, uh, I don’t think I’m gonna go anymore.”4

Feeling like a hamster in a wheel is a common feeling if you have ever worked the nine-to-five for an extended period of time. The bosses start to seem like your parents and routines start to feel more like psychological warfare. In Office Space after an uh, interesting hypnotist session, Peter’s work stress goes away and starts to do all the things that his job or his conscience kept him from doing. He simply stops going to work and with that the movie became a fantasy for the millions, at least myself, going to and from cubicles everyday.

Norma Desmond (Joan Crawford ): “I am big! It’s the pictures that got small.”5

Even though Sunset Blvd. was released in 1950, the characteristics of Norma Desmond, played by Joan Crawford seem so familiar. The delusions she had, the sense of entitlement, the obsession with keeping up appearances are now clichés of any once-famous performer. The theatrical quality that Joan Crawford brought to Norma only makes her more enticing to watch, almost as enticing as the scattered lives of celebrities today. Celebrity gossip is a guilty pleasure of mine and I find that this is the way I enjoy Sunset Blvd., seeing Norma in a way she would never want anyone to see her.

Customer: “I’ll have what she’s having.”6

Watching When Harry Met Sally and reaching the famous scene when Sally (Meg Ryan) fakes an orgasm in a diner is always amusing because you’ll find that Harry’s (Billy Crystal) reaction mirrors that of any men who are watching the movie with you for the first time. The otherwise awkward moment is made classic by another customer in the diner who recognizes the value of such an um, experience.

Rocky (Sylvester Stallone): “I got gaps; you got gaps; we fill each other’s gaps.”7

Most movies having to do with any sport usually feature love interests as an afterthought, fearing that it will detract from the overall goal of the film. In the movie Rocky, the love between Rocky and Adrian is tender and genuine. However, instead of detracting from Rocky’s struggle to become a boxing champ his love makes him stronger. I’I’ve always thought that the first Rocky was quite a romantic movie and the subplot gives the film more depth than a sports movie ever needed to be.

Katherine (Lindsay Duncan): “Regrets are a waste of time. They’re the past crippling you in the present.”8

Katherine, played by Lindsay Duncan, acts as muse, confidant, and sometimes a kick in the pants to Under the Tuscan Sun’s Frances (Diane Lane) who buys a house in Tuscany on a whim and struggles to find fulfillment while constantly weighing her impulsive decision. Katherine, a former actress who once was directed by Federico Fellini, is larger than life and at many times gives advice to Frances that was passed down from Fellini himself. Katherine lives her life in the present while Frances is still stuck in the past. It is not until she fully lets go that she realizes that she has everything she wants and is surrounded by people she loves.

Horace (Brent Chalem): “Wolfman’s got nards!”9

Monster Squad was my favorite movie when I was a kid. In fact any movie that featured kids following some scheme in order to save the world or just score some cash was a big hit in our house. I knew even then that the special effects were dated and the villains looked like they were dressed in stock Halloween costumes but the movie is full of great one-liners. The Wolfman was by far the scariest character but he seemed to share the same weakness as any other man and that was to be kicked in nards.

Jules (Samuel L. Jackson): “The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be a shepherd.”10

A hitman who has a change of heart was not a very common occurrence in movies before Pulp Fiction. Especially a hit man like Jules, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Hearing a bible verse before being killed is a chilling and cruel way to go and Jules delivered it in way would fill his targets with fear. But upon a near death experience, Jules decided that it was a wake up call and that he should start a new life. This is one of the themes of Pulp Fiction. There comes for many of the characters, an existential crossroads when they must choose to keep living the life they have or start out on a different path. The wisdom is in knowing when a crossroads is upon you. I have struggled with the choices I’ve made, wondering if the outcomes will be what I hope. In world of Pulp Fiction though, Jules made the right choice; he could have easily killed the two thieves trying to hold up the diner but lucky for them, he was in a “transitional period.”

1.Capote
2.Lost In Translation
3.Swingers
4.Office Space

5.Sunset Blvd.

10 Movies I Could Have Lived Without Seeing

10 of the worst movies I have ever seen

The Hulk– This was one of the biggest disappointments to me ever. I grew up watching the T.V. show which was amazing, so I had very high hopes for this movie. Unfortunately it let me down. It was boring, drawn out, and over all just painful to watch.

Abandon– I spent the whole time waiting for this movie to get off the ground, but it never did. It was un-original and frankly a little to boring for my taste.

Boogeyman– Oh my God, I was so excited about this one. I mean you have a great story that has terrorized children since forever and Barry Watson whom I have always found pretty talented. Mix this together and you would expect greatness right? Wrong, this is by far one of the worst horror movies I have seen to date. There is no excuse for a movie with such potential to turn out so bad.

The Fog– Yet another horror failure. I am a huge Tom Welling fan and the plot looked so promising, but the result was nothing short of a tragedy. Hollywood needs to learn that Horror and Romance were meant to be separated. I won’t take anything away from Tom though, this disaster was beyond his control.

Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines– They should have let this sleeping dog lie. Terminator 2: Judgment Day was one of the few sequels to surpass the original, I guess that wasn’t good enough, they had to try again. They tried and failed miserably, I had to force myself to sit through this, and I would never wish this disaster on anyone else.

Cold Creek Manor– This was the longest most un-thrilling thriller I’ve ever seen. As a matter of fact I think half way through the movie I gave up on watching and it turned into an unexpected make out movie for me lol.

Scary Movie 3- I guess when the Wayans left the project they took the humor with them. I honestly would have walked out on this one, but I paid $7 and I was there with my family. Worst comedy I have ever seen, I might have laughed a total of two or three times.

The Ring 2– This had to be the biggest disappointment for me to date. I was such a huge fan of The Ring and I had been waiting for this so when I finally saw the commercial I was beyond ecstatic. That feeling came and went rather quickly. The only decent thing about this film was Sissy Spacek’s performance. Nothing short of perfection. Too bad I can’t say that about the rest of the film.

Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life– You know the worst part about this? I knew it was going to be a disaster. But my brother talked me into going. He ended up going to sleep, I’m glad he paid, all I ended up losing was about two hours of my life.

When a Stranger Calls (2006)– T haven’t seen the original, but I have heard it was amazing. If that is the case, then I wonder what happened, because this was nowhere near amazing. Boring from start to finish, Hollywood has gotten lazy and it shows.
