Christian Quotes on Thankfulness– Showing God Gratitude

Thanksgiving is the language of heaven, and we had better start to learn it if we are not to be mere dumb aliens there.
-Arthur John (A. J.) Gossip

Being thankful is not telling God you appreciate the fact that your life is not in shambles. If that is the basis of your gratitude, you are on slippery ground. Every day of your life you face the possibility that a blessing in your life may be taken away. But blessings are only signs of God’s love. The real blessing, of course, is the love itself. Whenever we get too attached to the sign, we lose our grasp on the God who gave it to us. Churches are filled with widows who can explain this to you. We are not ultimately grateful that we are still holding our blessings. We are grateful that we are held by God even when the blessings are slipping through our fingers.
-Craig Barnes

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

He who thanks but with the lips
Thanks but in part;
The full, the true Thanksgiving
Comes from the heart
.

If you can’t be thankful for what you receive, be thankful for what you escape.

Receive every day as a resurrection from death, as a new enjoyment of life; meet every rising sun with such sentiments of God’s goodness, as if you had seen it, and all things, new-created upon your account: and under the sense of so great a blessing, let your joyful heart praise and magnify so good and glorious a Creator. –
-William Law

Pride slays thanksgiving, but an humble mind is the soil out of which thanks naturally grow. A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he gets as much as he deserves.
-Henry Ward Beecher

That thing that is not coming to you may seem good. But either the timing is wrong, or from His position He can see that the future of it is bleak. I have always believed that people who thank God only for delivering them from what happened are just scraping the surface of praise. The real praise comes when you start thanking Him for what could have happened but didn’t because of His swift grace!
-T. D. Jakes

God never promises to remove us from our struggles. He does promise, however, to change the way we look at them.
-Max Lucado

A heart that does not have the true ability to be utterly and genuinely delighted and grateful at the simple gift given by a friend, will find it equally as difficult to be utterly delighted in the gifts given by the King. –

15 Creative Ways to Raise Money for Your New Business Venture

If you have dreams and aspirations of owning your own business then I believe that you should never, ever, ever give up. Yes, it might take some time to manifest your dream into a profitable business venture but with determination, faith and a little creativity, you can start your dream business right now. I’ve done it, plenty of other business owners have done it too and now you can follow in our footsteps. In this article, I will discuss not one but 15 creative and extremely profitable ways to raise money for your new business venture. These ways will help you raise the initial start-up (regardless of the type of business you are planning to develop). Sound interesting? Well, keep reading.

1. Apply for a low interest credit card with a decent limit: This is not optimal, but it is one way of getting your hands on cash. The drawback is the interest that is charged for each purchase. So, be extremely careful when you go this route and make sure that you pay the credit card off as soon as your business starts turning a profit.

2. Apply for a business loan: This is tough to get as most banks still do not give loans for online ventures without you showing you have an equal amount invested. It is worth a try, however. When you apply, make sure that you carry along a well written business plan and have a concrete idea of how much money you need and what it will be used for.

3. Family loans: This is another type of loan that you probably do not want to do, but if the amount is small enough, you can probably pay it off quickly and avoid any family tension. If it is a larger amount, stay current on your payments and treat it just like you would any other loan – and don’t default.

4. Open a revolving line of credit: With this arrangement, you pay your bills with the credit and then pay your line of credit when you are paid for your product or service. This is available with most banks, but you do have to present them with either a credit history that is good or a convincing business plan.

5. Selling items you already own to build cash reserves: We all have stuff lying around that we do not use – that is why we have yard sales. Using this “stock” can generate some cash and costs you nothing but the auction or newspaper listing fees and a little time.

6. Purchase items on sale and then sale them for a profit. If you love discount shopping and have a knack for finding great sales, you can find sale items and then sell them for retail price on eBay.

7. Sell other people’s stuff for a commission: This idea is actually a spin off of #5. With this one, you sell other people’s junk for a commission.

8. Take in a silent partner: This is along the same lines of a loan, but family or friends might be more willing to help you out if they get an interest in the business. Realize, however, that you cannot just kick them out when the investment amount is repaid (unless you stipulate this in the initial written agreement).

9. Take on an extra job: This will allow you to finance your business venture by generating cash from another position until your business is able to substantiate itself or use the extra generated cash to build a reserve.

10. Pawn unused items: This is not preferable, but it is a way to generate cash. If you do a temporary pawn on an expensive item, you will have 30 days to return to the pawn shop and reclaim your merchandise. In the meantime, you can use the funds to give your business a jumpstart.

11. Take on a temporary part time job: Go work for a supermarket or a retail store. It is short-term and relatively easy work and because you do not need a lot of training, there will not be hard feelings when you leave.

12. Borrow from your retirement savings: You might want to consider cashing a bond or stocks, or borrow from your retirement savings. This money can always be paid back (with interest if you like) once your business is up and running.

13. Sell eBooks online: The investment is your time and research, but if you have a project, gift, cooking hints, etc. that you are good at, start your business by selling either writing and selling eBooks online, or purchase pre-written eBooks and sell them. If possible, sell them off eBay so that you can realize a higher ticket price per eBook.

14. Go in on a “one-time” venture to make money: Ask a friend to spot the start-up cash for one round of selling. That way, they are not a partner and you get the cash to get started.

15. Use a tax refund as investment assets: Most people spend their income tax checks on bills or stuff they want to do. Use your money as start-up cash.

In conclusion, you should never let money (or lack of it) keep you from pursuing and achieving your entrepreneurial dreams. Instead, use creativity and you’ll soon discover that you have more than enough money to start and flourish your new business venture.

13-Year-Old Washington-Parks Chess Team Student Defeats Grandmaster

It took more than three hours, but Washington-Parks Academy Chess Team member Guwoin Ingram, 13, forced grandmaster Martha Fierro – one of the highest rated women in chess – to resign the game. The match was held at the Detroit Institute of Arts and included 52 other competitors.

Guwoin, who had met Fierro a few days before the competition, carried his own strategy into the game: Fierro had informed him that she preferred to play defense (black) as opposed to offense (white). To keep the simul (short for “simultaneous”) competition streamlined, the competitor takes the role of the aggressor. As such, he had a reasonable idea.

“I wanted to keep the game real close,” Guwoin said. “I didn’t really want to trade off much until the end of the game. I knew I was going to win when we only had rooks on the board. I had more pawns on the right side of the board. She just couldn’t do it because my pawn game is pretty tight, so I wasn’t going to let her take my pawns.”

This win encourages Guwoin that the team has a good chance of winning the 2010 National Junior High (K-9) Championship to be held on April 8 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Guwoin’s mother, Sharon Ingram, was surprised by her son’s win.

“It was a surprise because obviously he’s participated in many simuls,” Ingram said. “Even though he’s a top player – he studies chess, he has a passion for it – I did not think he would beat her. I was very excited.”

Chess, she noted, has had a major impact on her son’s academic development.

“He struggled a bit in all of his subjects prior to the chess program,” Ingram said. “Now he just excels in math; he’s a much better student because of it. The fact that he succeeds at chess at a high level has translated into his academics. I am very proud of that, very thankful to Mr. Fite as well.”

Washington-Parks Academy Chess Team coach Kevin Fite, who organized the competition, was thoroughly pleased with the results.

“Martha Fierro faced the largest group of chess players ever assembled for a simul at the Detroit Institute of Arts and Detroit City Chess Club event,” Fite said. “The players and the public were very excited to see the International Women’s Grandmaster Fierro in action.”

Parent T.C. Yanish, whose son Christian has been on the team for three years, works to organize various fundraisers for the team’s competitions.

“The simuls are good because it prepares them. It challenges them in a setting where they’re playing against masters, experts,” Yanish said. “It’s an opportunity to be really challenged, relying on their skills and what they’ve been taught. I see a lot of determination in their playing. The junior high nationals are coming up, so we’ll be traveling by charter bus. It’s going to be a busy spring.”

Ursula Byrd, an administrative chess coach at Bates Academy in Detroit, encouraged her 7-year-old daughter, J’Nise, to compete against Fierro.

“I’m supporting it because I think it’s a good opportunity for my daughter to get some exposure to what a master can do playing the game,” Byrd said. “If the grandmaster can do it, she can too. She’s doing well for her age. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for her to learn about life through chess.”

15 Hour Internet Outage Demonstrates Venerability in System Exploitable by Terrorists

At approximately 12:45 PM Eastern on May 28, 2007, a Cable Cut caused over 170,000 Internet Customers of Mediacom (including myself) and many other Internet providers to loose their Internet connectivity for over 15 hours. The States of Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina were affected. This is the second major outage in two years which has affected the State of Georgia, according to what technical support personnel have told me, and personal experience.

This outage was apparently caused by construction near the Servers which connect to the backbone. The cost to businesses and individuals has yet to be determined, but could be quite substantial. This will be mitigated somewhat by the fact that it happened on a holiday, but demonstrates the venerability of the system. Redundant links to backbone services are not present, at least in the Southeastern United States. In the case of a terrorist attack, this venerability could be exploited to disrupt communications.

Terrorists may not have created this situation, but don’t think that they wouldn’t use it to their advantage. If they could cause such an outage to coincide with an attack, it would increase confusion and disrupt communications, not to mention the phone calls to technical support, increasing the burden on the communications networks which remain in place.

In the climate we find ourselves in, such a venerability needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Finding and correcting these types of problems before they become a nightmare should be priority one for FEMA and related agencies, as well as the businesses that supply the backbone services.

In today’s economy, Internet Connectivity is vital, not only to Law Enforcement and Public Safety, but to businesses and the many people who work at home. The Public Safety aspects aside, Work assignments are sent via the Internet, as well as vital business communications. Many businesses and homes now use Voice over IP technology which routes their phone communications over the Internet. Services such as ATMs and Internet Phone Companies are not available during such outages. 911 calls cannot be made in emergencies. Virtual Private Network Tunnels abound on the net, carrying critical business traffic, such as Bank Routing and ATM connectivity, and the Customer Reward systems of many businesses.

Internet experts preach redundancy in network resources, yet the very backbone of the system in the United States does not have such backup protections. This seems unfathomable in the 21st Century, where Internet connectivity is vital to many of the functions we consider to be critical to our way of life. Backbone connectivity is limited to a few very influential corporations, and they need to be responsible for supplying the redundancy needed. Customers and Legislators alike need to hold these Corporate Citizens feet to the fire until these redundant systems are in place across the country, not just in markets where it is “cost efficient”.

15 Minutes to Peace and Tranquility

If you’re like most people, though, you avoid this area because most of your decluttering would have to take place in the morning – for example, making the bed and putting clothes away. Who has time for that?

But it is possible to spend just 15 minutes giving it a quick decluttering when you get home from work or are done running errands for the day.
Start by making the bed. If you think you can change out the sheets in less than 5 minutes (because you are just that good), then go ahead. Otherwise, put the comforter or bedspread on, fluff up those pillows and be done with it.
Next you’ll want to tackle clothes. Do you have them tossed around all over? The dirty ones need to go into the hamper. If the hamper stays in sight, make sure it has a lid. If the hamper is in the closet, a lid is not really necessary (but a ‘nice to have’). If you have clothes that aren’t necessarily dirty – perhaps a button needs to be replaced – designate an area in your closet for these items. Perhaps get a basket to put them in so they are easily distinguishable from your other clothes. For clothes that don’t go in the closet (such as undergarments) and aren’t dirty, give them a quick fold and put them in a dresser or wherever they normally go.
With the two biggest clutter factors taken care of, you now need to remove or straighten up all the miscellaneous objects. Keep in mind the daily rule – if you don’t use it daily then it needs to be put away – and put the items away. And this is important: this is NOT the time to clean out the nightstand drawers. It’s very common when we stash something away in a drawer, we see the mess and are inclined to clean it. Save that task for another day when that is your only focus.
If you must keep items out, be sure they are clean and organized in a fashion that does not appear to be sloppy. For example, if you’re an avid reader and have magazines next to the bed, stack them in a neat pile putting the smallest on top and the biggest on the bottom. If there are items on a dresser or chest of drawers, be sure they are organized in groups of 3’s or 5’s and free from dust. If you have time, give any mirrors a quick wipe.
Last, there are kid’s rooms. All the above applies, however, in reality there is really only so much you can do with miscellaneous items. Depending on the age of the child, you can put toys in their designated bins or hang up items on hooks and such you’ve placed around the room. Beyond that, you’ll have to put a decluttering plan in place for the kids to follow or tackle the problem at another time.
That may seem like a lot go accomplish in 15 minutes but if you take a 1, 2, 3 approach (bed, clothes and miscellaneous objects), you can declutter your place of refuge within your 15-minute time frame.

15 Minutes Raw, Part 2

“She wants to be a Bollywood dancer,” I said. “She wants to dance in the Indian style while prancing about colorful sets built on a backlot in India.”

“Have you mentioned to her that she’s not exactly their type?” said Mark, sipping at his coffee.

“I told her as much,” I said, “and I got the standard ‘you don’t care about my dreams’ speech again.”

“Third time this month.”

“Fourth. I didn’t mention the one about getting her collage work displayed in the Louvre.”

“She actually thought she could do that?”

“Seriously.”

“I thought you were joking when you said she wanted to submit her work.”

“Nope. She had it all packed up and everything.”

Mark chuckled, stirring another packet of sweetener into his coffee. “What is she smoking and where can I get some?”

“Grateful Meds,” I said, “and if your doctor will write you a note, they’ll sell to you.”

“I love California,” said Mark, and took another sip.

“Migraines. She gets these migraines and she’s tried pretty much every over-the-counter remedy and the doctor says marijuana can help, so he wrote her a note for it.”

“Wild.”

“I know,” I said, taking a bite of my turnover. “First doctor she tried gave it to her.”

“Really? I never knew about the migraines back in college.”

“Probably because she never mentioned them until she moved to California. As far as I know, she never actually had them.”

“Like I said, I love California.”

“So finally I told her, ‘Sure. I’ll support you in whatever it is you want to do. If you want to take the lessons from that storefront on La Brea, I’ll give you some money for it. Just take me to India when you go.’ And she said that she could do without my sarcasm.”

“Well, sarcasm isn’t very attractive,” said Mark.

“I wasn’t being sarcastic.”

“I would have been.”

“But I’m not,” I said. “She’s got a point. She’s got dreams, and she wants to follow them. Who am I to tell her no?”

“No reason to pay for the lessons.”

“Maybe she’s finally found her calling. Maybe this’ll be it.”

“Yeah,” said Mark. “That’s what you said about the pottery classes, too. remember? She was going to move to Honolulu and make clay with basaltic sand mixed into it and do hand-thrown pottery for tourists?”

“Who hasn’t wanted to go to Hawaii?” I said.

“And then there was the time she was convinced that she could learn to play the pan pipes and folk venues all over California would hire her to play.”

“It’s not a sound you hear much any more.”

“You’re damn right it’s a sound you don’t hear much any more,” said Mark. “And there’s a good reason for that. Nobody likes to hear the pan pipes. Only people with names like Zamfir play pan pipes. It’s not a solo instrument – it’s like a secondary back-up instrument on Graceland-era Paul Simon. Nobody takes the instrument seriously.”

“Sure,” I said. “Point out the failures.”

“Point out one thing she’s stuck with,” said Mark. “One thing. Seriously. I want to know one thing she’s stuck with for more than two weeks at a time.”

“Me,” I said. “She stuck with me.”

“No,” said Mark. “You stuck with her.”

“Same difference.”

“I don’t think you realize what you’re dealing with,” said Mark, sliding his coffee to the side and thumping the table with his index finger. “Let me break it down for you. You can’t say you’re actually dating her because she doesn’t like to be thought of as your girlfriend. She hangs out all night at gallery openings and goes to hotel rooms with the artists. She’s always telling anybody who’ll listen all about the guy that she snogged at the last godforsaken Woodstock rip-off. And you’re the one who’s been pursuing this, not her.”

“Point taken,” I said. “But there are other things she’s stuck with.”

“For more than two weeks at a time?”

“Sure.”

“Name one.”

“The Caravan.”

“That’s a car. You don’t get to count that. Nobody can just haul off and buy a new car because they’re tired of it.”

“But see? She stuck with it.”

“Is she tired of it?”

“Yes.”

“I rest my case,” said Mark.

“All right,” I said. “But maybe this time–“

“Maybe nothing,” said Mark. “Two weeks and she wouldn’t be going back again.”

“You’re a cynic, Mark. You’re a bastard who doesn’t believe in the inherent goodness of man.”

“And that’s why I still have my sanity,” said Mark, taking a deep drink of his coffee.
