2009 NBA Playoff Schedule: A Blog of the 2009 NBA Playoffs

The 2009 NBA Playoffs are set now, as the long regular season has come to an end. The playoff brackets include some very interesting match-ups in the first round, with everything getting started this weekend. The Boston Celtics will start their NBA Title defense against the Chicago Bulls as the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference, but have a tough task ahead of them in order to repeat.

The #1 seed in the Eastern Conference will be the Cleveland Cavaliers, who get to play the Detroit Pistons in the first round, probably without Allen Iverson playing at all. Over in the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers secured the #1 seed, and Kobe Bryant will lead them against the Utah Jazz, who ended up falling all the way to the #8 seed for these NBA Playoffs.

The Phoenix Suns didn’t quite make the 2009 Playoffs, while the Dallas Mavericks were able to move up in the last week of the season. Likewise the Utah Jazz stumbled to the #8 seed, and unfortunately for them will have to play the Lakers in the first round. The Atlanta vs. Miami match-up in the Eastern Conference, and the Denver vs. New Orleans match-up in the Western Conference looks to be the best matches scheduled this season.

2009 MLB Playoff Preview

The 2009 MLB playoffs begin October 7, but first there will be a play-in game between the Tigers and Twins to determine the AL central champion. The play-in game will be Tuesday, October 6, at 5 p.m. Eastern on TBS. This play-in game is only the fifth in history and the first time ever that a team plays in a tiebreaker game in back-to-back years. Last year the Tigers lost to the White Sox. This years tiebreaker game will be held at the Metrodome in Minnesota, which could be the very last professional baseball game there, The Twins are scheduled to move into a new stadium for next season. The play-in game will be considered a regular season game, and both teams come into the game with identical records of 86-76. The winner of the tiebreaker game will move on to play the Yankees in the ALDS. The Yankees win their 16th division title and will have home field advantage, as they have the best record. The Yankees also boast the best over-all record in baseball this year. Whoever plays the Yankees will have a tough challenge but the Playoffs always brings out the best and often worst of teams.

The other AL match-up will be the Red Sox against the Angels. Even though the Angels have the better record, I would say that the Red Sox are favored to win this series. The Red Sox come into the Playoffs as the Wildcard winners, but being the Wildcard team is nothing new to them. In past years the Red Sox have won the World Series, despite never having home field advantage. The Angels have often stumbled in recent Playoff history. Both ALDS matchups will begin on October 7 or 8, depending on the winner of Tuesday’s play-in game, and will be airing on TBS.

The NLDS are set to start on October 7. The Phillies will host the Rockies, who have been on a hot streak. The Phillies are playing well, and should be rested and ready for a tough series. This will be quite a hard series to predict, but I would think that the Phillies would have the advantage, although, the Rockies do have momentum on their side. I would pick the Phillies to win the series, but I don’t think it will be a cakewalk. Game one is October 7 at 2:37 p.m. Eastern on TBS.

In the other NLDS matchup it will feature the Cardinals at home against the Dodgers. This will be a very good series to watch, each team features good pitching and above average hitting. The Cardinals feature one of the best sets of starting pitching in recent memory, as well as arguably the best overall hitter in the past 10 years in Albert Pujols. This match-up is very historic for other reasons, the Cards, and the Dodgers are the most winning teams in the NL, having combined for 43 pennants, and 16 World Series titles. This series will come down to who gets the hottest the fastest, whether it be the Cardinals pitching or the Dodgers hitting. Game one is October 7 at 9:37 p.m. Eastern time on the TBS network.

The ALCS will begin on October 16 and will be aired on the FOX network. I think this will be a very legendary match-up between the Red Sox and Yankees. These teams have so much history and either team could win. The Yankees will have home field through out the playoffs, but that really doesn’t matter to the Red Sox. The Red Sox are a veteran team and have proven over the years that they can win under any circumstances. However, I think in the end the Yankees will win the series.

The NLCS will begin on October 15 and will be aired on the TBS network. I think the defending champs, the Phillies will be going up against the Cardinals. This will be an amazing match-up in my opinion, and it will more than likely go a full 7 games. I think the Phillies could have an offensive advantage, but the Cardinals will counteract that with dominant pitching. If this series takes place, it could go to either team. I think the Cardinals will win this long, tough series.

The World Series is set to start on October 28 and will be aired on the FOX network. My prediction is that the Yankees will host the Cardinals. I think that A-Rod, Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia will have good postseasons this year and could be the deciding factor for the Yankees to come back to glory, and therefore proving the fact that you can buy a championship. I think this will be an amazing match-up, and that the Cardinals will have the best chance to beat the Yankees. Although I am picking the Yankees to win the World Series, I think that the Cardinals will not make it easy for New York. This should be a good series going 6-7 games, maybe some controversy included. There would no doubt feature lots of action and suspenseful moments. Of course this isn’t set in stone and I could be wrong, I have been wrong many times before.

2009 National League All-Star Third Basemen

Third base has been a tough position to pin down in the National League this season because there have been so many talented players on the field. Some are hitting for average, some are hitting for power, and some are showing off their defensive prowess at the hot corner. This all makes it tough to pick all-star selections from third base, because nobody is doing all of these things.

2009 All-Star Third Basemen in the NL:

1. David Wright, New York Mets

David Wright has been an enigma for the New York Mets this season, as he is in the line-up for his power, but hasn’t been doing that. He has only 4 home runs and 36 RBI so far, but that isn’t what is getting him noticed. Currently Wright is hitting .364 with 82 total hits already. He is hitting above his typical pace for average, and is distancing himself from most of the rest of baseball. Add to that a total of 17 stolen bases, and he is clearly well deserving of a spot on the 2009 National League all-star team.

2. Ryan Zimmerman, Washington Nationals

Simply because he is playing well for the Nationals should get Zimmerman an all-star nod, but he is also putting up some nice statistics. Through the first 60 games of his season, he has 12 home runs, 42 RBI, and a nice .310 average. He has also scored 42 runs, achieved 77 hits, and cracked 16 doubles to round out his 2009 stats. It’s all very impressive, and shows that he is becoming that player that everyone predicted he eventually would. It has all garnered him a much deserved nod on this all-star team.

3. Mark Reynolds, Arizona Diamondbacks

Reynolds is quietly putting up a studly season for Arizona, leading third basemen in home runs to this point of the season. His statistics are some of the best of his career, with 17 home runs, 45 RBI and a .281 batting average already. He also has 15 doubles and 13 stolen bases to go along with 42 runs scored. Though Arizona may be struggling at times, Reynolds is not, and he is clearly making a run at one of the reserve slots on the 2009 National League All-Star team.

Notable National League Third Basemen:

Pablo Sandoval, San Francisco Giants — 8 HR, 33 RBI, .332 AVG
Pedro Feliz, Philadelphia Phillies — 3 HR, 35 RBI, .318 AVG

2009 NBA MVP Candidates

As the All-Star break approaches, a clear picture of the NBA’s best is taking shape. The 2009 NBA MVP race is tight and intriguing with two major frontrunners, yet several strong candidacies. Leading the pack are LeBron James and Kobe Bryant who are leading their teams to two of the three best records in the league.

LeBron James has led the Cavs to one of the top records in the league, filling up the stat sheet in the process. James is among the league leaders in scoring (28 points per game), steals (1.9 per game), and assists (7.1 per game). He is also pulling down seven rebounds, shooting 49 percent from the field, and blocking more than a shot per contest, and if the season ended today he would finish with the lowest turnover rate of his career. LeBron is the frontrunner for the 2009 NBA MVP award.

Reigning MVP Kobe Bryant is once again shouldering the load for a Bynum-less Lakers squad. Bryant is averaging 27 points per game, including a 61 point performance at Madison Square Garden. His secondary numbers aren’t quite as strong as LeBron’s: 5.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.4 steals, and a 47.6 field goal percentage. Bryant is close to James, but he is currently bested by the frontrunner in nearly every major category.

Dwight Howard has the Magic back in title contention for the first time since Shaquille O’Neal was still in Orlando. Howard is the league’s top rebounder and shot-blocker with 14 and three per game respectively. He is averaging 20.6 points on 56.4 percent shooting, currently ranking sixth in field goal percentage. Much like the case of Bryant with the loss of Andrew Bynum, Howard faces the additional challenge of carrying a greater load with Jameer Nelson likely out for the season. His response in the coming weeks could propel him to the front of the MVP pack.

Over the last two years, Chris Paul has surpassed Steve Nash to become the best point guard in the league as well as a strong candidate for MVP. Paul leads the pack in assists with 10.9 and he has a dominant lead in steals with 2.8 per game. He is one of only four guards to be flirting with 50 percent shooting from the field and he is the only player averaging at least 20 and 10 in points and steals.

More so than in any other sport, NBA MVP voters take into serious consideration overall team performance when selecting a winner. Dwayne Wade may be a significant victim of this phenomenon as his numbers are as good as anyone’s, but his Heat team is only a few games above .500. With a league leading 28.3 points, five rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and 1.4 blocks per game, Wade’s numbers are as good as if not better than LeBron’s and Kobe’s, but his team may hinder his ability to earn votes.

Other candidates for the 2009 NBA MVP award and All-NBA include Mavs’ forward Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan of the Spurs, Brandon Roy of the Blazers, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce of the Celtics, Chauncey Billups of the Nuggets, Kevin Durant of the Thunder, Danny Granger of the Pacers, and Joe Johnson of the Hawks.

2009 MLB All Star Team Starting Lineups

The National and American League All Star game rosters and lineups were announced on Sunday nationally on TBS. With that in my mind, here is a look at your stating eight position players.

At catcher for the National League, Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals will bolster the backstop. His teammate and leading vote getter Albert Pujols will start at first for the National League All Star team. Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley gets the nod. At shortstop, it will be Hanley Ramirez of Florida. David Wright of the New York Mets will play the hot corner for the National League All Stars. In the outfield it will be Carlos Beltrain(New York), Ryan Braun(Milwaukee) and Raul Ibanez(Philadelphia). Ibanez is injured and might not play. The American League starting lineup starts with catcher Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins. Mark Texeira of the New York Yankees will play first base. Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox gets the nod at second base. At third base, Tampa Bay sensation Evan Longoria get the call in the starting lineup. The American League outfield includes Jason Bay(Boston), Josh Hamilton(Texas) and Ichiro Suzuki(Seattle).

So who will be the starters for the National and American League now that the lineup is set? I can only guess the National League will go with Tim Lincecum of the San Francsisco Giants as it’s starter. The American League should counter with Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals. Both are setting the world on fire and deserve to start. Dan Haren and Matt Cain have also been terrific for their respecitve National League teams but I am fairly confident Lincecum will get the call. The American League starting pitching is terrific, too and I think Roy Halladay of Toronto would certainly be another option as starter.

The All-Star game will be played in St. Louis at Busch stadium on July 12th.

2009 NA Playoffs: Celtics' Glen Davis Buries Buzzer Beating Shot in 95 -94 Win Over the Orlando Magic

The Magic though did get production from their go- to guys. Howard led the Magic’s scorers with 23 points, as well as contributing 17 boards and 3 blocks, continuing to be the most dominant man on the floor.

Rashard Lewis put up 22 points, and continues to be a matchup nightmare for the Celtics. Too quick for Davis to guard, and too strong for Scalabrine, Doc must start to entertain the idea of Pierce guarding Lewis, as I believe Davis could guard Hedo Turkoglu with his size.

And an unsung hero throughout this series has been Mickael Pietrus who has continued to hit clutch shots throughout. Also of note, Courtney Lee who almost sealed the game with his late 4th quarter push.

Looking forward to the next game, the Celtics will need production from their bench. Eddie House (who has been on fire), had just 1 missed attempt during the game as the Magic smothered him whenever he was on the floor. The only Celtics bench player to score was Stephon Marbury, who added 2 points with a beautiful running floater over Dwight Howard. Considering the amount of minutes the Celtics starters have played, one doubts if the C’s can make it much further depending on them for virtually all of their points.

The Magic on the other hand, will need to come up with an answer for Rajon Rondo. I suspect Magic coach Stan Van Gundy may entertain the idea of starting Anthony Johnson over Alston as Johnson had himself a game in Game 3 substituting for a suspended Alston. Johnson seems a better matchup offensively against Rondo, with his size advantage he is able to get to the basket simply by powering through the smaller Rondo. The Magic will also need to see more from J.J. “draft bust” Redick, as he logged a disappointing 2 points for the game as well as going 0 – 5 from the land of 3.

Game 5 will be in Boston, and Davis’ last second shot is the type of shot a team can get a lot of momentum from. It will be interesting to see how the Magic will now react to adversity, as the pressure has shifted to them. If the Celtics manage a Game 5 win, I believe Orlando’s will have virtually no chance to conjure any more wins in this series.

2009 NBA Basketball Playoffs Round Two Match-ups and Predictions

The first round of the NBA Basketball Playoffs are finished and 8 teams remain from the starting field of 16. The first two teams to advance were the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers, the two favorites who many are predicting will meet in the finals. Here are the match-ups for round two and my predictions:

#1 seed Cleveland Cavaliers vs. #4 seed Atlanta Hawks – The Cleveland Cavaliers are a much improved team from the last time they were in the playoffs and will be the hardest team to beat. That was evident as the Cavaliers swept the Detroit Pistons in four games. Every win against the Pistons was a double-digit win. Good news for the Atlanta Hawks is that they beat the Miami Heat in seven games and advanced to the second round series. Bad news for the Hawks is they have to face the best team in basketball, the Cavaliers in the second round. Lebron James is the best player in the NBA and has a good supporting cast in Ben Wallace, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Mo Williams, Delonte West, and Wally Szczerbiak. The Cavaliers will enter the third round of the playoffs without a loss. Cleveland Cavaliers win series 4-0.

#2 seed Denver Nuggets vs. #6 seed Dallas Mavericks – The Denver Nuggets are beginning to hit their stride as they beat Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets in five games including a record 58-point win in Game 4. The Dallas Mavericks seem to finally be healthy as a team as they pulled off the biggest upset in the playoffs so far beating the San Antonio Spurs, also in five games. The Nuggets won the regular season series against the Mavericks 4 games to 0 but the Mavericks weren’t playing with all their starters. This will be the most competitive series in the second round and could go either way. Dallas Mavericks win series 4-3.

#1 seed Los Angeles Lakers vs. #5 seed Houston Rockets – Houston Rockets have finally won a first-round playoff series. The Rockets beat the Portland Trailblazers, who were just happy to be back in the playoffs, in six games. The Los Angeles Lakers showed why they are the #1 seed in the Western Conference by beating the Utah Jazz in five games. The Lakers will be too much for the Rockets who lost Dikembe Mutombo to a knee injury. The Rockets are also playing without their best player Tracy McGrady, who got injured in the regular season. The Lakers seem to be clicking on all cylinders as they have Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher, Trevor Ariza, and Andrew Bynum returned to the lineup recently. This series won’t last long. Los Angeles Lakers win series 4-1.

#2 seed Boston Celtics vs. #3 seed Orlando Magic – The Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls played the series for the ages and one that won’t soon be forgotten. The Celtics survived 4 OT games and 7 OT periods, beating the Bulls in seven games. The Orlando Magic had an easier series than the Celtics, beating the Philadelphia 76ers in six games, even without Dwight Howard in Game Six. The Boston Celtics struggled at times against a .500 team in the Bulls before Ray Allen and Paul Pierce took the team on their backs. The Magic squandered big leads in their first round series but held on to win it. The Celtics are without their best player, Kevin Garnett, who is out for the entire playoffs. That might be their ultimate downfall. We might be in for an upset here. Orland Magic win series 4-2.

2009 Memorial Day Events and Festivals in Geauga County Ohio

Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May, in 2009 this falls on May 25th. This day of remembrance was formerly known as Decoration Day. The intent of this holiday is to commemorate U.S. men and women who have died while giving military service to their country. This day was enacted in order to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. The date is significant in that it is celebrated close to the reunification day which came shortly after the civil war ended.

After World War I this was changed to include American casualties of any war or other military action. Originally the idea was to visit the graves of fallen soldiers, and cover their grave site with spring flowers and other decorations. With Memorial Weekend coming up residents from all over Geauga County are anticipating the Memorial Day events in our community. There is an extensive list of Memorial Day cemetery services all across the county. There are also a handful of other activities, and a few festivals planned for that weekend in Geauga County.

One of Geauga County’s really interesting activities is the Civil Was encampment, held annually at the Geauga County Historical society’s “Century Village”. This is a small settlement style village with buildings and other things from around the area of some historical value. A complete Civil War encampment transforms Century Village for the Memorial Day weekend.

The Century Village grounds are covered with characters wearing authentic period dress, all “living” at the encampment. You can see them doing things the exact same way they were done way back in time, even before we invented electricity! There is also a Civil War Re-Enactment. Dates of this event are: Saturday & Sunday, May 23 & 24, 2009 10 am to 5 pm Century Village is maintained by the Geauga County Historical Society, they can be reached at: 440.834.1492 or go to their website:

An important stop while you are at Century Village is the Crossroads Store, which is a museum and market for the Century Village Museum. You can Visit the Crossroads Store while you are at the re-enactment. The store on the museum grounds boasts unique pottery, charming linens, products made by local Historical Artisans, and herbal soaps. They continuously have a supply of their own maple syrup, famous apple butter, and specialty jams. You can even have an ice cream and refreshing cold soda before you head home.

One of the largest festivals of the season is the “Blossom Time Festival” where you can meet with friends, family, and neighbors in a small town atmosphere, and enjoy the spring flowers and trees in full bloom. The Blossom Time Festival takes place in the Chagrin Falls Riverside Park, and is hosted by the Chagrin Valley Jaycees. At this time of year Chagrin Falls is transformed into a warm, inviting place to spend some time having fun.

The Blossom Time Festival consists of eating junk food, live music every night, enjoying the carnival rides, and playing the carnival games at the festival. Once you have had plenty of fun at the carnival, you can walk through this small town enjoying all types of regular dining and shopping in this small village which boasts a number of unique restaurants and shops. One local favorite is the Popcorn shop situated almost directly over the falls.

Also seek out “Dave’s Cosmic Subs” you most certainly will not regret making this stop!

2009 Movie to Look Forward To: The Haunting in Connecticut

I’m sure many of you reading this has already caught the awesome documentary that aired on the Discovery Channel, “A Haunting in Connecticut”. It was the series first airing of the show, and it started off with a bang. In my opinion “A Haunting in Connecticut” was by far the scariest and creepiest episode in the entire series.

It dealt with a family that moved into a large house in Connecticut in order to be closer to their oldest son’s hospital where he was being treated for cancer. The home has a secret of its own; it was once a funeral house! Not long into living there their eldest becomes possessed, and evil spirits that lurk make the lives of the new family a living hell.

I know that my brief description does not do this one any justice, but if you are interested in learning more about this case, definitely check your local listings for when this particular episode will be aired. Also read this review here for a more in depth description of the documentary.

Anyhow, due to its popularity, the true story of the haunting that occurred is being made into an actual film. June 19th 2009 will be the date the flick gets released into theaters, and I recommend you don’t miss it.

After learning about the new movie, I was intrigued to find out more about the case surrounding it though. Many of you who whole heartedly believed this story may want to check out what the author of the first book dealing with The Haunting in Connecticut has to say about this whole story.

It turns out that Ray Garton was brought to the home to meet the family, and he was to write a true story surrounding the haunts occurring at the home. Unfortunately though it turns out that most of what he wrote was completely fabricated, and that he was told to make the story scary, which he did!

His book is called In a Dark Place: The True Story of a Haunting.

You can read his entire letter here.

For even more details surrounding this case, I came across a particular blog that I was very impressed with. You can read it here.

In this blog you get to take a look at every detail surrounding this case, and how many believe it is based off of pure lies, and a sleazy attempt at making money.

In case you didn’t know, Lorraine Warren has tight ties to this case, just as she did in the Amittyville horror case, which many people consider a complete hoax. Lorraine Warrens credibility has been publicized for years now, so you are free to come to your own conclusions.

At any rate though, I’m not here to judge, I’m just here to provide those that are curious a closer look at what this supposed ‘haunting’ may really be. (A money making strategy)

Regardless of whether everything is true or false, the movie that will be in theaters this June is sure to be entertaining nonetheless. So if you like a creepy tale, true or false, this one is sure to be a hit with fans of horror.
