2010 CMA Awards - Miranda Lambert Praised by Loretta Lynn in Country Music

CMA Awards 2010 – Miranda Lambert was praised by legendary country star, Loretta Lynn after she presented the 27-year-old artist with Female Vocalist of the Year. The award was announced moments after Lambert sang “Coal Miner’s Daughter” with Sheryl Crow.

Lambert also won CMAs 2010 Album of the Year and Video of the Year.

Miranda Lambert had quite the night at the CMAs, sharing the spotlight with her fiance, Blake Shelton who won CMA Awards including Male Vocalist of the Year and Musical Event of the Year (shared with Trace Adkins in “Hillbilly Bone”).

Lambert was remarkable in her performances and candor as admiring Loretta Lynn for all she’s contributed to the country music industry and all that the iconic artist has done for women. Miranda said she wants to continue doing all she can for women in country music. Women have a lot of fine artists to look up to.

If the honor of singing one of Lynn’s songs and winning coveted awards wasn’t enough for the young country crooner, country music’s most iconic performers gave her the biggest compliment a musician can get in Nashville.”Nobody in country music is more country than Miranda,” Loretta Lynn said. Miranda Lambert proves to have what it takes to be in the same league as Loretta Lynn. Her recognition will make her a winning start to come in every year at the CMA Awards in country music.

Chinese New Year, is also known as the “Spring Festival”. It falls on a different day of each year because it is based on the cycle of the moon. Some of the traditions include, spring cleaning that removes bad luck from your home, feasts of seafood and dumplings, and handing out money in red envelopes. Red is to be worn and present during ceremonies as it is thought to ward of bad spirits.

2010 CMA Awards: Brad Paisley Wins 'Entertainer of the Year'

Every year the Country Music Association saves the biggest and most prestigious award for the end of the show. This time at the 2010 CMA Awards Brad Paisley took home the coveted title. Paisley had been nominated for five years before winning the award. The much-loved singer and gifted songwriter has been busy riding the waves of a successful career singing the music he loves, not to mention being a husband to his wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley and a father to their two little boys.

Spending his speech acknowledging and thanking those who helped him get here Brad said, “My hero Little Jimmy Dickens has a saying, that is if you see a turtle on a fencepost it had help getting up there and I’m the turtle on the fencepost at this point.”

Paisley dedicated his award to his grandfather and spent an emotional moment explaining how his grandfather inspired him to pursue music. The singer said his grandfather was the one who encouraged him to learn how to play the guitar. With a tearful smile Paisley said, “I don’t think he thought that it would draw 20,000 people.”

After being nominated for five years in a row, Paisley finally left the stage with country music’s biggest award. In addition to winning ‘Entertainer of the Year’ Brad also co-hosted the evening with fellow artist Carrie Underwood.

2010 Chinese Horoscopes for Tiger Animal Sign

The Year of the Tiger begins on February 14th 2010. What can Snakes expect in the Year of the Tiger?

This is the Chinese year ahead horoscope for people born in the years: 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001

Because of the experiences you go through with others during the first half of the year, you will find yourself more able to put yourself in other people’s shoes. You will be more sensitive to the needs and feelings of friends and loved ones and there will be moments when you will start putting them before you. This may involve making some personal sacrifices but you won’t begrudge this at all.

All these kind of situations can work to your advantage in negotiation processes. If for example you start aiming towards joint long-term goals, you will find that others are more willing, as the year wears on, to go along with your suggestions.

Snakes will be highly intuitive and sensitive during this year and if you are single and looking, romance is a strong possibility in the autumn.

It’s a year to be careful about money. Should any extra cash come your way it would be best to save it for a rainy day rather than splash out on items you don’t really need. As a Snake you enjoy the little luxuries in life but during 2010 take a practical approach to your everyday life and spending habits.

The positive qualities you bring into life this year are the way you can focus on your goals, ignore distractions, and achieve success through the attention you are willing to give to detail. The people you mix with at this time are likely to be friends you have made of old.

During the summer you could be embarking on a long-term project. Help or support will be received from a friend, colleague or neighbour. If doors suddenly open, be sure to take advantage of whatever comes your way.

In August there is a stubborn and self-centred individual that you will be trying to deal with. Angry words won’t work, so do try to be tactful as difficult as it may be. You learn something about yourself at this time and that is: you can be patient and diplomatic when it is necessary.

As the year ends you might find that this will be a good time to clear away neglected work of the past month or so. Doing some much overdue tidying and getting your life organised might not be a bad idea for you’ll certainly have the energy and determination to get through a good deal before the end of January.

2010 Fall Line Up on NBC

Many favorite shows on NBC will be returning to the airwaves this Fall. Staples such as Law & Order SVU, Biggest Loser and The Office will be returning for another season. Newcomers to last year’s lineup, such as Parenthood and Minute to Win It will be returning to prime-time again this upcoming season. NBC execs have pulled the plug on the long-running, original series, Law & Order. While the spin-offs will still remain on TV, and anew series has been added to the family of shows, the parent show is no more.

Here is a run-down of the series premieres set for Fall 2010:

Monday nights- The Event. This show has already began commercials, and I am intrigued as to what will happen. It is a top-secret cover up that is stumbled up by Jason Ritter while searching for his missing fiance. This show is sure to have twists, turns and many unexpected moments. Should be fun!

Also a series premiere on Monday nights is a show titled Chase. The main character in this show is a U.S. Marshall who hunts down the bad guys. Could be good, but think it has already been shown.

Tuesday nights-There are no new shows on this night, but Parenthood will return to its regular time slot from last season. It will be good to have at least one more season with this great family comedy.

Wednesday nights brings us two new shows. First up, Undercovers. A married couple with regular jobs during the day, find that the nights are hotter as undercover agents. This action-packed drama should be a nice change of pace from the reality shows we have been faced with for so long.

And from the Law & Order family comes a new show, Law & Order: Los Angeles. This portion of the L&O franchise focuses on the trials and tribulations that is the rich and famous. With famous, ripped from the headlines story lines, Law & Order: Los Angeles is sure to be a new-found hit!

Thursdays will still house the comedy lineup we have all come to know and love. Community, 30 Rock and The Office can all be found once again in their familiar time slots. Adding to the famous Thursday night of comedy are two new shows.
The series premiere of Outsourced. I have heard little about this show so far, but from what I have read, it is about a variety of cultures being mixed together in one close working environment. Could prove to bring a laugh or two. I am currently undecided about this one.

Also adding to the Thursday night comedy block is Love Bites. Love Bites is scheduled to be an hour long romantic comedy about the joys of dating, with such an unexpected twist. The show is produced by Cindy Chupack, who produced Sex and the City.

Another reality show hits the lineup on Fridays this Fall. School pride is basically a makeover show that is dedicated to transforming the educational system.

And last but not least, Friday nights on NBC offers another new series. Outlaw, starring Jimmy Smits, is all about a supreme court justice who abruptly quits his position in order to work for the “under dogs”. This show seems original, entertaining and promising. It would sure be worth watching for a week or two, at least.

So, there you have the Fall lineup for NBC. The Fall of 2010 seems to promise the return of many favorites, and many bright new series as well.

2010 Elections: Political Landscape Still Contentious

The much anticipated 2010 elections are over and like most high-octane expectations, the aftermath feels like a hang-over: beat up and exhausted.

Republicans Take the House

The outcome was pretty much as expected with enough wins for the GOP to drop kick Nancy Pelosi right on out there, but not quite enough to get rid of Barney Franks. (Oh, bother) Though, I suspect that there will be enough Republican brethren to make his job a tad bit more uncomfortable and for that, I say a big “amen.”

Harry Reid wins Nevada Senate Race

It was surprising to learn that grandfatherly, Harry Reid survived the contentious Nevada race for Senate with Sharron Angle (I’m betting Joy Behar is somewhere yelling, “Take that, bitch!”) and I was more than a little disappointed that Barbara Boxer will have her tired old rear-end attached to yet another seat during a congressional hearing, making patronizing comments on race and reminded high-ranking Generals to call her “Senator” because “she worked so hard for it.” Oh, puh-leeze.

John Kasich Ohio Governor

Ohio got rid of Democratic Governor Strickland and installed Republican John Kasich instead, along with more than a few Republican Senators and Representatives of the House. So, you just run and tell that, homeboy.

Prop 19 Fails

Jerry Brown beat that whore, Meg Whitman to replace Arnold as the governor of Cal -ee-fourn-yuh and Proposition 19 failed to generate the buzz that supporters were hoping. It didn’t pass. Sorry, dudes. Take another toke and try again next time.

No Sharia Law in Oklahoma

Oklahomans passed a state constitutional amendment banning Islamic Sharia law in their courts (yeah, you read that right) sending the strong message that burqas are so last season. Louisiana philanderer, David Vitter, overcame his prostitution associations to beat out his Democratic challenger, Charlie Meloncon, for the run for Senate. Because, look, folks on the bayou can tolerate a lot of things, but liberalism ain’t one of em, cher.

Rand Paul wins Kentucky Senate

Libertarian, masquerading as a Republican, Rand Paul, took the Senate seat for Kentucky, however, I was much more impressed with the fact that Jimmy Ray Vaughn (Stevie Ray’s little brother) played at his victory party. Freakin’ rock on, Rand Paul.

Cuomo in Paladino out

A Republican took President Obama’s former seat and Democrat, Andrew Cuomo, handily whipped that Republican nut job, Carl Paladino for a seat in the Senate for New York.

The Thrill is Gone for Chris Matthews

All in all things went according to hoyle, but the prize for the most contentious exchange of the evening goes to blow-hard, Chris Matthews over his war of the words with Michelle Bachmann. It seems Chris is a sore loser and the rest of the *bleeps* at MSNBC are probably dealing with one bad case of heart-burn this morning as well. (See the exchange here)

Okay, Republicans – try not to screw it up. Okay?

2010 Fantasy Baseball: Relief Pitcher (RP) Breakouts

2010 Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide: Relief Pitcher (RP) Breakouts. Relief Pitcher (RP) Breakout selections are based on a standard scoring system in mixed AL/NL fantasy baseball leagues for the 2010 season. Scoring system stats include: wins, losses, saves, strikeouts, era, and whip – (W, L, SV, K, ERA, WHIP). IP = innings pitched during the 2009 season.

Relief Pitcher (RP) Breakout selections are based on players who have the potential to post a significant increase in pitching statistics during the 2010 season, as compared to their 2009 season and/or previous season statistics over their major league career. Each players age for the 2010 season is provided after their name.

Top 5 – Relief Pitcher (RP) Breakouts 2010

#1 – Carlos Marmol – Chicago Cubs (27)
There is little doubt that Marmol has the potential to be an elite closer in the MLB. However after struggling mightily in the closers role for the Cubs during the 2009 season, the mental part of the game is Marmol’s main hurdle heading into the 2010 season. At age 27 to begin the 2010 season, this may be the years Marmol transforms into elite closer status at the major league level. And even if Marmol does not claim the closers roll to begin the 2010, his outstanding strikeout potential still makes him a solid relief pitcher for fantasy baseball teams, while also offering plenty of potential to claim the closers roll at any time during the season. If Marmol wins the closers job to begin the season, he could be looking at a 30 plus saves season in 2010.
2009 Stats: 74 IP, 2 W, 4 L, 15 SV, 93 K, 3.41 ERA, 1.46 WHIP
2010 Stat Projections: 75 IP, 3 W, 3 L, 25 SV, 100 K, 2.50 ERA, 1.10 WHIP

#2 – Leo Nunez – Florida Marlins (26)
While the 2009 season was an obvious breakout year for Nunez, the fact remains that he is still a very unheralded and relatively unknown major league closer. With 26 saves and a 4.06 ERA on record for the 2009 season, Nunez offers plenty of potential for posting improved stats during the 2010 season, as 30 plus saves and a sub 3.50 ERA are more than reasonable to expect. Overall, while some fantasy baseball teams will draft closers early, Nunez is one closer to target later in the draft, as he boasts the ability to tally the same type of stat potential as numerous closers drafted well before him.
2009 Stats: 68 IP, 4 W, 6 L, 26 SV, 60 K, 4.06 ERA, 1.25 WHIP
2010 Stat Projections: 75 IP, 3 W, 3 L, 30 SV, 65 K, 3.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP

#3 – Rafael Soriano – Tampa Bay Rays (30)
While staying healthy has always been a problem for Soriano throughout his entire MLB career, he was able to stay fully healthy during the 2009 season, and as a result showed just how good he can pitch as he ended the 2009 season posting an outstanding 102 strikeouts and 27 saves. Now as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays, Soriano will be the full time closer for the Rays during the 2010 season. If he can remain healthy and play the entire season, Soriano has the potential for a career year with stats resembling 35 plus saves, 90 strikeouts and an ERA around 2.50.
2009 Stats: 75 IP, 1 W, 6 L, 27 SV, 102 K, 2.97 ERA, 1.06 WHIP
2010 Stat Projections: 70 IP, 2 W, 3 L, 35 SV, 90 K, 2.50 ERA, 1.05 WHIP

#4 – Frank Francisco – Texas Rangers (30)
A 25 saves season last year can be considered Francisco’s initial breakout campaign, however injuries derailed Francisco’s total potential statistics during the 2009 season, as setup man CJ Wilson was able to claim a handful of Francisco’s save opportunities. With a potent run scoring Rangers offense likely during the 2010 season, Francisco could easily break out with a career high 35 saves while also tallying a sub 3.50 ERA and a WHIP around 1.10. Add in Francisco’s excellent strikeout ability, including his career major league strikeout ratio of over 1 strikeout per inning, and Francisco has the potential to turn into a late round steal for fantasy baseball teams in 2010.
2009 Stats: 49 IP, 2 W, 3 L, 25 SV, 57 K, 3.83 ERA, 1.11 WHIP
2010 Stat Projections: 65 IP, 3 W, 2 L, 35 SV, 80 K, 3.50 ERA, 1.10 WHIP

#5 – Peter Moylan – Atlanta Braves (31)
After undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the 2008 season, Moylan made a successful comeback during the 2009 season as he was able to tally 73 innings pitched while posting 6 wins, 25 holds, and a 2.84 ERA. And even though the Braves brought in Billy Wagner and Takashi Saito to fill the closer role and a late inning relief role, Moylan is actually the most reliable bullpen arm that the Braves have entering the 2010 season. If an injury were knock Billy Wagner out for any amount of time, Moylan is likely the best option to fill the closers role for the Braves during the 2010 season.
2009 Stats: 73 IP, 6 W, 2 L, 0 SV, 61 K, 2.84 ERA, 1.37 WHIP
2010 Stat Projections: 80 IP, 3 W, 2 L, 10 SV, 65 K, 2.90 ERA, 1.25 WHIP

2010 Fantasy Baseball Position Rankings- Shortstops

2010 Fantasy Baseball Position Rankings- Shortstop

Regardless of how you build your fantasy roster, you are going to need some steals, and shortstop is one place you will find it. This position is loaded with speed, from top flight burners who can get you points all by themselves to well-rounded hitters who you can pair up with a fast outfielder to run over your opponents. Power may be in short supply at shortstop, but there are plenty of other positions where you can beef up your punch. For stealing bases, however, shortstop is where you look to lock up some thieves. So ladies and gentleman, start your engines as we take a look at our shortstop rankings…

Top Tier Starters (8)- Looking for a little muscle with your speed? These eight can bring you both.

1. Hanley Ramirez (.324 BA, 29 HR, 102 RBI, 111 Runs, 33 SB) The King of All Shortstops, and a top contender as the number one pick in any draft. Will get you monster numbers across the board. Has there ever been a trade which helped both teams more than the Red Sox/Marlins deal of Hanley/Anibal Sanchez for Josh Beckett/Mike Lowell?

2. Troy Tulowitzki (.293 BA, 28 HR, 97 RBI, 102 Runs, 16 SB) Scary part about these numbers is that, as great as they are, Tulo can do even better on the basepaths. 20+ steals are a distinct possibility.

3. Jimmy Rollins (,272 BA, 18 HR, 72 RBI, 103 Runs, 35 SB) So he’s not as good a real player as a fantasy one. Do we really care? He will get so many AB’s on top of the loaded Phillies lineup that he amass big counting stats, which is all that matters to us fantasy owners.

4. Derek Jeter (.317 BA, 15 HR, 71 RBI, 101 Runs, 20 SB) How good is Jeter? He’s old enough to have babysat most of these top flight shortstops when in high school, yet his numbers are still competitive.

5. Jose Reyes (.294 BA, 12 HR, 56 RBI, 95 Runs, 48 SB) The ultimate risk/reward guy this year. If healthy, Reyes would anchor many a title-winning squads. If his hammys explode again, he will be what he was last year- the death of them all. He ranks #5 for what he could do, but don’t reach for him. Spend the extra dollar for a good backup or you could wind up starting Ronny Cedeno.

6. Jason Bartlett (.292 BA, 10 HR, 55 RBI, 82 Runs, 24 SB) The power comes back down to earth, but the rest of his game stays solid. At worst he goes .280 with 20 steals, so he’s a safe play.

7. Alexie Ramirez (.282 BA, 18 HR, 74 RBI, 72 Runs, 15 SB) There is soooo much talent here. This year he takes another step forward.

8. Asdrubal Cabrera (.287 BA, 9 HR, 67 RBI, 84 Runs, 15 SB) Lost in the carnage that was Cleveland’s season was the fact that they have a really good shortstop.

Second Tier Starters (8)- Now we get into the “specialty starters”, players who can help you in either power or speed, but not both.

9. Yunel Escobar (.294 BA, 13 HR, 65 RBI, 80 Runs, 5 SB) If we were ranking SS by their value in real baseball, Yunel would be right behind the Big Five. But we’re not, so he isn’t. It is the difference between ranking your favorite fantasy women and those you’ve actually dated. But Yunel will help you out everywhere but in steals, and he still has some offensive upside.

10. Elvis Andrus (.263 BA, 5 HR, 49 RBI, 80 Runs, 36 SB) Still a work in progress at the plate, but his glove will keep him in the lineup, and he gets on base enough to run wild.

11. Ryan Theriot (.283 BA, 5 HR, 47 RBI, 85 Runs, 22 SB) The quietest 20+ SB guy you’ll ever find.

12. Orlando Cabrera (.277 BA, 8 HR, 66 RBI, 82 Runs, 15 SB) Still has some gas left in the tank, at least enough for decent production and mid-teen steals.

13. Johnny Peralta (.267 BA, 17 HR, 82 RBI, 80 Runs, 2 SB) If you have SB covered elsewhere, enjoy the 3B production from his last year qualifying at SS.

14. Stephan Drew (.267 BA, 16 HR, 70 RBI, 78 Runs, 6 SB) He’s one of the Drew boys, so there’s always a chance of injury. Did his parents anger some voodoo witch doctor or something? Look for a least a minor bounceback from last year’s numbers.

15. Miguel Tejada (.292 BA, 14 HR, 74 RBI, 75 Runs, 5 SB) When the crash comes, it will come hard. The final descent begins this year.

16. Rafael Furcal (.276 BA, 8 HR, 46 RBI, 80 Runs, 15 SB) Speaking of crashing…

Top Tier Backups (8)- Still looking for speed? Fetch, boy, fetch!

17. Alcides Escobar (.283 BA, 4 HR, 40 RBI, 63 Runs, 41 SB) Only real question is if he will start the season in the minors. I don’t think so.

18. Everth Cabrera (.256 BA, 3 HR, 34 RBI, 65 Runs, 28 SB) Consider him Elvis Andrus’ little brother.

19. Erick Aybar (.285 BA, 5 HR, 54 RBI, 71 Runs, 13 SB) Nice across the board value, and could bump up those steals a little bit.

20. JJ Hardy (.263 BA, 18 HR, 66 RBI, 71 Runs, 1 SB) He’s the “what’s not like the others” in this tier. Won’t steal many bases, but does have the power to help any fantasy team at MI.

21. Cliff Pennington (.253 BA, 5 HR, 44 RBI, 66 Runs, 21 SB) Could approach Ryan Theriot-like numbers, and that isn’t bad.

22. Brendan Ryan (.270 BA, 4 HR, 42 RBI, 59 Runs, 16 SB) These numbers might be a tad on the conservative side.

23. Ian Desmond (.257 BA, 8 HR, 48 RBI, 54 Runs, 13 SB) I like what the Nationals are doing. Playing this kid all year would make me like them even more.

24. Marco Scutaro (.267 BA, 9 HR, 55 RBI, 81 Runs, 9 SB) One of Boston’s big free agent grabs ranked this low? He’s old, had a career year last year, and doesn’t contribute in any one fantasy category particularly well- yes, he’s ranked this low.

Second Tier Backups (8)- Now we get down to the guys you don’t have to worry about losing any real production if/when you drop them.

25. Christian Guzman (.292 BA, 7 HR, 47 RBI, 72 Runs, 5 SB) The emptiest .290 BA you’ll ever meet.

26. Edgar Renteria (.272 BA, 7 HR, 51 RBI, 63 Runs, 7 SB) Good thing SF manager Bruce Bochy loves his old guys or Renteria may not even have a job.

27. Juan Uribe (.253 BA, 13 HR, 52 RBI, 47 Runs, 2 SB) If you are going to wait this late to get a backup, it may as well be one that qualifies at two positions.

28. Brendan Harris (.263 BA, 8 HR, 47 RBI, 56 Runs, 2 SB) The American League Juan Uribe.

29. Mike Aviles (.286 BA, 7 HR, 34 RBI, 42 Runs, 5 SB) Will miss the start of the season, but could help a bit later in the year. Besides, who is going to stop him from regaining his starting SS gig in Kansas City, Yunel Betancourt? B’wah!

30. Julio Lugo (.254 BA, 4 HR, 33 RBI, 46 Runs, 14 SB) Can still steal a few bags.

31. Nick Punto (.241 BA, 2 HR, 30 RBI, 53 Runs, 14 SB) So can he.

32. Alex Gonzales (.250 BA, 8 HR, 34 RBI, 39 Runs, 1 SB) He can’t.

Five to Watch

Starlin Castro- Some think the Cubs will start him right out of Spring training. I say they will give him a couple of months in the high minors. Watch this guy real closely. If you can reserve him without costing you anything, do it!

Reid Brignac- He’s ready to help now, but it is real crowded at the Tampa Bay inn at the moment. An injury away from being roster-worthy.

Jed Lowrie- When Marco Scutaro’s body remembers that it’s old, Lowrie will see AB’s.

Ramon Santiago- I don’t care if Adam Everett is Mark Belanger’s clone defensively, he hits like a third grader. Santiago can help if he’s playing.

Ramiro Pena- Yes, Jeter’s almost indestructible. I said “almost”…this guy can play if he gets the chance.

Here is as good a place as any to give you a recap of last year’s auction in our experts league and show you this tiering system in action. I’ll go position by position for clarity’s sake:

1B- We kept Mark Teixiera at a huge price, as top producing first basemen had their prices driven up by a mad owner determined to get one. This killed our budget for the position, so we had to take a $1 second tier guy to back up Big Tex. We weren’t real happy about that.

2B- We had Rickie Weeks as one of the second tier starting second baseman, and he was one of the last we had listed when he came up. Got him for a good price, and was real happy with his start. When he went down, we had already realized that our second tier backup (Eugenio Velez) was a stiff, and had dropped him for Alberto Callaspo. (Lesson point- Keep an eye on improving your bench early in the season!) When Weeks went down, in stepped Callaspo, backed up by Mark Ellis, another waiver claim.

SS- Orlando Cabrera was our starter, who we got in a very similar situation to Rickie Weeks. Much like with 2B, we targeted SS for the steals, and wanted to back up Cabrera with a 20 steals guy. As such, we tiered our backups with that in mind, and there was our number one guy in the top tier of backups staring at us cheaply- Jason Bartlett. Now we never suspected that Bartlett would go all Derek Jeter on everyone, but we knew he would give us the floor of what we wanted- 20 steals. (Lesson Point- Buy the floor, and maybe you will get the penthouse, too.)

3B- Adrian Beltre came to us at a reasonable price and time, but we saw one player we had identified as a starter who had similar skills to Beltre being ignored. As the auction continued, we began to hoard some money to get a player we considered a starter at a backup’s cost. That player was Mark Reynolds. (Lesson Point- Always try to back up your starters with players who will bring a similar skill set to the table.) We did not see the SB’s coming, but we knew that either Beltre or Reynolds would go deep 30 times, which is what we wanted out of 3B.

C- Tiering system worked perfectly, except every catcher we rostered suffered a fairly sever injury and missed significant time. We were down to using catcher #5 Josh Bard for the playoffs- eeeek!

OF- We held on to BJ Upton for his steals, which made his anemic hitting more palatable. (Lesson Point- Never expect too much from a guy, and only pay the price for what you do expect). As you will see in the upcoming OF article, we tier outfielders as a #1 through #6 player. Upton we had as a number one, so that meant we did not have to chase the Carl Crawford’s or Jason Bay’s of the world. By letting money drain out as others did, we were able to keep back our cash. As a result, we were able to buy outfielders one tier cheaper than we had budgeted. Our last buy, Mark Teahan, was our number six OF who we had locked in as a number five. With that sort of quality at the bottom of our OF depth chart, we dealt Teahan to a team who needed an OF for Paul Konerko early in the season, giving us a quality backup 1B who also DH’ed a bunch for us. (Lesson Point- bench quality can be dealt for bench quality).

I’ll give you the pitching recap when we get to the starting pitching rankings. Until then, third base next!

2010 Fantasy Baseball: Outfield (OF) Comebacks

2010 Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide: Outfield (OF) Comebacks. Outfield (OF) Comeback selections are based on a standard scoring system in mixed AL/NL fantasy baseball leagues for the 2010 season. Scoring system stats include: runs scored, homeruns, rbi, stolen bases, and batting average – (R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG). AB = at bats during the 2009 season.

Outfield (OF) Comeback selections are based on players who have the potential to post a significant increase in offensive statistics as a batter during the 2010 season, as compared to their 2009 or previous season stats. Each players 2010 fantasy baseball position eligibility and their age for the 2010 season is provided after their name.

Top 15 – Outfield (OF) Comebacks 2010

#1 – Josh Hamilton – CF/RF – Texas Rangers (29)
Coming off of a huge breakout season in 2008, Hamilton was a complete bust for fantasy baseball teams in 2009 after he struggled through hitting slumps and injuries. Yet at just age 29 and entering the prime of his career, Hamilton offers plenty of potential to rebound back into a 30 homerun and 100 rbi hitter during the 2010 season. With all-around solid hitters in Ian Kinsler, Michael Young, Nelson Cruz, Vladimir Guerrero, and the young and emerging Elvis Andrus and Chris Davis all complementing each other in the lineup, Hamilton should find himself with plenty opportunities to tally RBI’s and runs scored during the 2010 season.
2009 Stats: 336 AB, 43 R, 10 HR, 54 RBI, 8 SB, .268 AVG
2010 Stat Projections: 100 R, 30 HR, 115 RBI, 10 SB, .290 AVG

#2 – Grady Sizemore – CF – Cleveland Indians (27)
Sizemore has one injury plagued and bad stat season in 2009, and magically numerous fantasy baseball managers believe Sizemore should be ranked lower than fellow fantasy baseball outfielders Justin Upton, Jacoby Ellsbury, Ichiro Suzuki and Jason Bay to name a few? How quickly they forget that Sizemore tallied four consecutive 20 plus homerun and 20 plus stolen base seasons from 2005-2008, including a 33 homerun and 38 stolen base season just in 2008. If you ask me, the top 4 fantasy baseball outfielders entering the 2010 season should be Ryan Bryan, Matt Kemp, Matt Holliday and Grady Sizemore. If Sizemore falls to around the #10 OF drafted in your fantasy baseball league, whatever team drafts him is getting an absolute steal!
2009 Stats: 436 AB, 73 R, 18 HR, 64 RBI, 13 SB, .248 AVG
2010 Stat Projections: 100 R, 25 HR, 80 RBI, 30 SB, .275 AVG

#3 – Carlos Quentin – LF – Chicago White Sox (27)
Following up his huge breakout campaign in 2008 with a major bust showing during the 2009 season, Quentin who struggled to return from his late 2008 wrist injury during the 2009 season, should be 100% healthy to begin the 2010 season. With health back on his side, it only seems natural that Quentin is an ideal candidate for a comeback season in 2010. After entering the 2009 season with a tremendous amount of hype surrounding his name in fantasy baseball drafts, Quentin is nearly the forgotten man who could easily tally 30 plus homeruns and 100 rbi as a mid round steal for fantasy baseball teams in 2010.
2009 Stats: 351 AB, 47 R, 21 HR, 56 RBI, 3 SB, .236 AVG
2010 Stat Projections: 90 R, 30 HR, 100 RBI, 5 SB, .280 AVG

#4 – BJ Upton – CF – Tampa Bay Rays (25)
After posting an outstanding 24 homeruns and 22 stolen bases during the 2007 season at just age 22, the expectations for Upton have been off the charts from fantasy baseball managers over the last two years. And while Upton has emerged with clear cut 40 plus stolen base ability per season in the majors, his homerun numbers have not even come close to 20, as he has only been able to tally 9 and 11 in each of the past two seasons. Yet even with that said, Upton at just age 25 for the 2010 season, is still learning the ropes at the major league level and has more than enough potential to bounce back into 20 plus homerun form during the 2010 season. It would not surprise me one bit if Upton tallied 25 homeruns and 50 stolen bases during the 2010 season. Think of BJ Upton as a major post-hype sleeper entering the 2010 season.
2009 Stats: 560 AB, 79 R, 11 HR, 55 RBI, 42 SB, .241 AVG
2010 Stat Projections: 90 R, 20 HR, 80 RBI, 45 SB, .280 AVG

#5 – Alfonso Soriano – LF – Chicago Cubs (34)
Injuries has severely plummeted the fantasy baseball stock for Soriano over the past two years, however at age 34 and with full health possible for the 2010 season, Soriano still offers the ability to tally 30 homeruns and 15 stolen bases in 2010 if he can manage to rack up at least 550 at bats. There is no doubt that the injury concerns surrounding Soriano are real, which means Soriano clearly should not be drafted early in fantasy baseball drafts to begin the 2010 season, but he is an excellent mid round gamble who offers outstanding big time stat potential that few other OF options can offer fantasy baseball teams.
2009 Stats: 477 AB, 64 R, 20 HR, 55 RBI, 9 SB, .241 AVG
2010 Stat Projections: 90 R, 30 HR, 90 RBI, 15 SB, .275 AVG

#6 – Corey Hart – RF – Milwaukee Brewers (28)
To say it nicely, Hart was downright awful as a major league hitter during the 2009 season. However after winning his arbitration case and earning an even higher salary in 2010, odds seem to be pretty high that those jury panel members were looking at Hart’s back to back seasons of 20 homerun and 20 stolen base stats during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. With this in mind, and the fact that Hart will be just 28 years old for the 2010 season, a return to 20 homerun and 20 stolen base territory is definitely possible for Hart in 2010.
2009 Stats: 419 AB, 64 R, 12 HR, 48 RBI, 11 SB, .260 AVG
2010 Stat Projections: 80 R, 20 HR, 90 RBI, 20 SB, .275 AVG

#7 – Alex Rios – CF/RF – Chicago White Sox (29)
While the dramatic drop in batting average during the 2009 season is concerning, the odd reality is that Rios was still able to rack up 17 homeruns and 24 stolen bases during the 2009 season. With plenty of major league success already under his belt, and a career .281 batting average in the majors to boot, expecting Rios to hit at his 2009 season batting average of just .247 simply does not seem all that realistic. A return to 20 homeruns, 20 stolen bases, and a .280 batting average during the 2010 season is definitely likely.
2009 Stats: 582 AB, 63 R, 17 HR, 71 RBI, 24 SB, .247 AVG
2010 Stat Projections: 80 R, 20 HR, 85 RBI, 20 SB, .280 AVG

#8 – Juan Pierre – LF/CF – Chicago White Sox (32)
After two seasons of backup duty in the Dodgers lineup, Pierre will enter the 2010 season with an opportunity to claim the starting left field job in Chicago, while also potentially taking over the leadoff spot atop the White Sox lineup. If Pierre does in fact claim the leadoff spot to begin the 2010 season, it would not be surprising to see him tally 650 at bats during the 2010 season, while racking up stats approaching 50 stolen bases, 100 runs scored, and a solid batting average likely topping .290.
2009 Stats: 380 AB, 57 R, 0 HR, 31 RBI, 30 SB, .308 AVG
2010 Stat Projections: 95 R, 1 HR, 40 RBI, 45 SB, .295 AVG

#9 – Manny Ramirez – LF – Los Angeles Dodgers (38)

#10 – Magglio Ordonez – RF – Detroit Tigers (36)

#11 – Rick Ankiel – CF/LF/RF – Kansas City Royals (30)

#12 – Xavier Nady – RF – Chicago Cubs (31)

#13 – Conor Jackson – LF/1B – Arizona Diamondbacks (28)

#14 – Xavier Nady – RF – Chicago Cubs (31)

#15 – Ryan Ludwick – RF – St. Louis Cardinals (31)

2010 Fantasy Baseball - Breakout Short Stops

While Hanley Ramirez is the undisputed best shortstop (and some may say overall player) in fantasy baseball and players like Derek Jeter, Jimmy Rollins, Jose Reyes and Troy Tulowitzki are the next best in line; here are a few Shortstops that you should monitor this offseason and target in drafts for the 2010 baseball season.

Jason Bartlett – Tampa Bay Devil Rays
After coming off a career year where he hit .320 AVG, 14 HRs, 66 RBIs, 90 Runs and 30 SBs, Jason Bartlett should be the 6th shortstop taken in fantasy baseball drafts in 2010. The main question is, what round will he be drafted in as the top tiered shortstops are usually off the board by round 5. If I were a betting man I’d say Bartlett will be going on average in the 7th round of drafts this season. With the job in Tampa Bay locked up for next season Bartlett should produce similar numbers to last season. I see a slight increase in HRs and RBIs as well for Jason. As an all star for the first time in 2009, I see him making the team in 2010 and also ranking in the top 50 fantasy baseball players for the year. If you can snatch him up in the 6th or 7th round he will pay you great dividends at that price.

Elvis Andrus – Texas Rangers
This 21 year old hasn’t even started to show the league what he is made of. After two years of constant hype I believe that 2010 is the year that Elvis Andrus stops showing small flickers of potential greatness and actually delivers a consistent campaign in which he provides excellent fantasy value to all his owners. After finishing 2009 with .267 AVG, 6 Hrs, 40 RBIs, 72 Runs and 33 SBs; Andrus was only about a quarter owned in fantasy leagues among all formats. In addition his numbers ranked him 20th among shortstops in the major leagues. In 2010 Elvis will improve immensely and show more pop, consistency and speed than he did last year. All his teammates are impressed with his raw talents and believe a little seasoning is all he needs. Well 2009 was his seasoning, Michael Young gladly moved to 3B for him and the sky is the limit for this product of Venezuela. In 2010 I project Andrus to finish up between 8th and 13th among shortstops with numbers around .280 AVG, 10 HRs, 58 RBIs, 84 Runs and 42 SBs. Keep an eye on this youngster and strike before the iron gets too hot.

Alcides Escobar – Milwaukee Brewers
With J.J. Hardy shipped to the Twins this offseason for Carlos Gomez, Brewers general manager Doug Melvin made it clear that the highly regarded Brewers prospect Alcides Escobar would be the team’s starting shortstop in 2010. Currently he is listed 8 on Major League Baseball’s top prospects list and that’s saying a lot for this 22 year old who has already shown the league what he’s got. While he doesn’t possess much power, he is a consistent hitter and would fit ideally in the 2 hole as he has plenty of speed to complement his bat. In only 38 games last season for Milwaukee, Escobar hit .304 AVG, 20 Runs, 1 HR, 11 RBIs and 4 SBs over 125 ABs. This is roughly a quarter of a season for a raw talent. I must say great things are going to come of him in 2010 with a fulltime position in tow. Although I wouldn’t draft him until the later rounds of your draft I foresee the following season out of him in 2010: 311 AVG., 83 Runs, 13 HRs, 69 RBIs and 27 SBs.

Orlando Cabrera – Minnesota Twins
He may be 35 years old and not a player you should target in keeper/dynasty leagues, but Orlando Cabrera will most certainly be a serviceable fantasy shortstop in 2010. You may be asking how could someone this old be a breakout player? Well I consider him among this category because he will put up even better numbers in 2010 than he did in 2009. Although he is a defensive liability (Led MLB shortstops with 25 errors – which we don’t care about for fantasy purposes) Cabrera shined while standing at home plate. In 2009 he hit .284 AVG, 83 Runs, 9 HRs, 77 RBIs and 13 SBs. I see Cabrera hitting above .300 AVG while chiming in 90 Runs, 15 HRs, 85 RBIs and similar SBs to last season. If you haven’t drafted a shortstop by round 15, this may be your man. He is also a great fill-in short stop in case your top tiered Reyes hurts his hammy again.

Cristian Guzman – Washington Nationals
Only 4 years younger than Cabrera is the 31 year old Guzman. Plagued by injuries for most of his career, Guzman is set for a big season in 2010. Last season in 135 games he hit .284 AVG, 74 Runs, 6 HRs, 52 RBIs and 4 SBs. These numbers are pretty weak for a guy of his talents. In defense of his season he did and still does play for arguably the worst team in baseball. 2010 may get a little bit better for him from a teammates perspective, but I think he personally will be a leader in the clubhouse and on the field. In 2010 I predict Guzman to hit .305 AVG, 88 Runs, 12 HRs, 70 RBIs and 12 SBs. I think he will have his first completely healthy season in Washington and he will surprise many. Keep an eye on him in the final rounds of your draft.
