2010's Top 10 - The Health Food List

There is something in the air…something that smells of 2010’s newest, weirdest foodies and their newest obsessions. Now, I’ve been a vegetarian for eighteen years of my life and a vegan for three, but 2009 was full of whimsical health foods that I’m pretty sure did not come from planet Earth.

Well the new year is ringing in a whole new list of healthy foods for us to chomp down on, starting with the top ten for 2010:

  1. Agave nectar – Some of us might recognize this sweet syrup as the plant that brought us Tequila. Really though it has a much healthier benefit. Because it is 25% sweeter then regular sugar you do not need to use as much. So cut your calories in half and satisfy your taste buds – replace your honey and sugar with delicious Agave nectar.
  2. Acai berries – The acai berry first popped onto the hot scene a few years ago when it was praised as the “Wonder Berry”. The small, dark purple berry is rich in antioxidants and dietary fiber and have been harvested for the use of many a weight-loss product. Slightly bitter, acai berries are best in juices or smoothies and give you a healthy dose of nutrients.
  3. Almonds – While almonds are hardly new to the health food world, they never seem to stop being a health trend. Almonds are said to clear complexions, improve the movement of food through the colon and help prevent cancer. They are full of protein and mono-saturated fat, so you can snack on them and never feel guilty. Plus, they are absolutely delicious!
  4. Fennel – Never heard of it? You are not the only one. This odd looking green is both uniquely delicious and surprisingly healthy. Also know as Anise, Fennel can help with coughing, clearing cloudy eyes, the flow of breast milk and can even be used as a diuretic. TMI? Well, trust me, its delicious, health benefits or not.
  5. Kale – I’m the last person to pick up a random green off the mister at a grocery store but after many people prompted me to, I finally tried Kale. I am happy I did. This bitter green is unexpectedly satisfying. I use it most often in soup and it adds a pop of both flavor and nutrition. Kale is full of beta carotene, vitamins K and C and calcium, among other things. Add it to a soup or a salad mixed with tomatoes and avocado.
  6. Figs – Full of calcium, potassium, vitamin K and fiber, figs are a little piece of heaven wrapped in a surprisingly tasty package. Along with other nutrients figs are rich in flavonoids and polyphenols. They are also known to have a laxative effect…mmm, yummy.
  7. Pomegranates – The bittersweet seeds of this fruit have been growing in popularity lately due to their known health benefits. Besides being plentiful in vitamins and antioxidants, pomegranates are said to have health benefits in relation to cancer, diabetes, lymphoma, coronary artery disease and even the simplest of common colds. Plus, they are just plain delicious.
  8. Tea – It seems to me that tea has been around, well, forever. And likewise people have been singing its praises since then. Full of antioxidants to the max, tea has been at the top of the health list for years. Green tea especially is said to maximize the amount of weight you lose and help you lose it faster. (Sweeten it up with some Agave nectar).
  9. Sweet potatoes – At only 54 calories (approximately) per sweet potato, these are the perfect food for any time. Stock full of fiber, several kinds of vitamins and potassium, these vegetables are known to help prevent cancer and slow aging. A food like that will definitely stand the test of time!
  10. Cream of Wheat – Our last Top 10 may be a bit of a surprise, but hear me out. While very low in calories and fat, cream of wheat has an amazing amount of vitamins and nutrients. It famously sticks to your stomach, leaving you feeling filled longer then most foods. So eat this for breakfast of for a snack with some sweetener (agave, remember) and feel full and healthy for hours.

My goal for 2010? Stick to my top 10 and become as healthy as possible. With the right recipes you can be eating from the top 10 daily. Mmm I’m hungry – Gotta go whip up some Cream of Wheat!

2011 "The Bachelor" - Photos of Brad and Women Behind-the-Scenes

Behind-the-scenes photos of Brad Womack and his contestants on “The Bachelor” 2011 have been released. The pictures are from a January episode of “The Bachelor” when the cast meet with Dr. Drew.

See photos HERE of behind-the-scenes filming

It’s fitting that “The Bachelor” brought Dr. Drew in for the 2011 season given Brad’s story. There will be uncomfortable moments in this episode without question. What questions will be asked of Brad and his contestants? Someone will be put on the spot — or all of them will be.

In a lot of the behind-the-scenes pictures, Brad is photographed with several of the women during one-on-one time. Emily is in two of the photos.

There’s one good thing about the group dates as “The Bachelor” progresses, less women are on the group dates. Michelle should be happy about that. She’s one lady who makes it clear she wants Womack to herself. She’s green with envy — I mean “jealousy” — anytime Brad is with another woman.

“The Bachelor” 2011 airs Monday nights at 8:00 p.m.,EST on ABC.
