5 Backyard Hazards for Dogs

Having a nice, big fenced yard is a dog owner’s dream. Being able to just open the door to let them run, play and do their business is a convenience many dog owners pay a premium for. However, things may not always be as they seem. There may be multiple hazards awaiting Fido in your yard. Here are some common backyard hazards and tips to consider that will help keep your dog alive and well.

Rabbit, bird or cat feces – No matter where you live in the country, you are likely to have the feces of other animals somewhere in your yard. To many dogs, this provides a veritable smorgasbord. According to the ASPCA, “The consumption of fecal matter can cause bacterial-related gastrointestinal problems, and may also transmit parasites such as worms and certain diseases.” For this reason, they advise taking your dog into the yard on a leash until your are able to train him to leave other animal feces alone.

Predators like coyotes, hawks and poisonous snakes – Depending on where you live, there is a good chance you have predators in the area that could harm or even kill your dog. There is virtually no way to keep out birds of prey, and some species can easily pick up a toy breed like a chihuahua or yorkie. Some areas may also have rattlesnakes or other poisonous reptiles and amphibians that are impossible to keep out of your yard. Coyotes can be kept out with a 6-feet high fence, but many backyard fences aren’t nearly that high. The best course of action here, is that if you have any of these predators in your area, never let your dog out alone.

The lawn – Most dog owners report that their dogs have eaten grass from time to time. Although experts disagree on why dogs exhibit this type of behavior, most do agree that it’s generally harmless. Harmless, that is, unless your lawn contains toxic herbicides or pesticides that can actually poison your dog. Please read product labels carefully and if using a lawn service, be sure to choose one that uses non-toxic products.

The pool – Pools are as dangerous for our dogs as they are for small children. Even if your dog knows to keep his distance, accidents can happen. Running or playing near the pool can result in your dog falling in, and even if he knows how to swim, water temperature or the shock of unexpected submersion can have a bad result. Installing an emergency ramp made especially for pets, or a pool alarm that alerts you if a pet falls in, are both ways you can help keep your dog safe around the pool.

Poisonous plants – Chances are that when most people purchased their homes, they gave little consideration to the types of plants, bushes and trees the landscaping contained. The fact is, however, that many common landscaping plants are poisonous to dogs. From asparagus ferns to yucca, there are literally hundreds of plants that could cause serious harm to our dogs. If your yard contains any of these toxic plants, you should take your dog out on a leash until he learns to leave them alone.

Before just opening the door and letting your dog enjoy his freedom, take a survey of your yard. Do some research, and if necessary, take preventative measures to ensure his safety.

5 Bands that Should Have Been Big

Most everyone discovers some precious little indie gem nobody else seems to know about. Sometimes these adolescent indie treasures grow up into full-fledged indie men-Death Cab for Cutie, anyone?-but sometimes, these indie bands we’re so certain are going to make it big fizzle out and die instead. Here are five bands I was certain were going to change the world. A small piece of me died each time I heard that one of them had broken up.

(Click on the name of the band to link to their MySpace profile so you can check out their music).

Kane Hodder

This hardcore band from Bremerton, Washington, seemed on the fast track to success. After attracting a huge following in the Pacific Northwest, they got picked up by Fueled by Ramen records-home of such bands as Panic! At the Disco and Cobra Starship-who re-released a special edition version of their album, The Pleasure to Remain So Heartless, which they had previously been released by the indie labels Suburban Home/Cowboy Versus Sailor, who also released their first album, A Frank Exploration of Voyeurism and Violence.

But The Pleasure to Remain so Heartless was the only album Kane Hodder released on the Fueled by Ramen. In 2008, they independently released an EP-entitled, Through the Bloody Channels, We Raise Our Sails-but the band broke up soon thereafter.

Watashi Wa

Watashi Wa’s sound can best be summed up in two words: unbridled optimism. Whether the lyrics of their songs actually reflect that feeling is irrelevant; Seth Robert’s soaring vocals can’t help but a put a smile on the most cynical pessimist.

The band put out their first album in 1998 on Harvey Records, entitled Stephen’s First Day Out. From there, they moved to Bettie Rocket records where they released Lost a Few Battles… Won the War and What’s In The Way. The band moved on once again to Tooth & Nail Records where they released the EP The Color of Today and a full length album, The Love of Life. The band broke up in 2004, but then reformed under the name “Eager Seas” and released a self-titled album on Tooth & Nail. They also broke up, but you can still hear Robert’s amazing vocals in the band Lakes.

Twothirtyeight

Twothirtyeight had balls. Whereas 311 sought brevity through numerals, Twothirtyeight decided to spell out the number that made up their name instead.

Twothirtyeight had some of the catchiest guitar riffs ever devised by mankind. They released two albums on Takehold Records-Missing You Dearly and Regulate the Chemicals-before signing to Tooth & Nail Records, which re-released Regulate the Chemicals and then released the band’s final full-length album, You Should Be Living. The band broke up in 2003 (although you can still check out lead vocalist Chris Staple’s fantastic voice in the great band Discover America).

Forever Changed

Forever Changed brought a lot of raw energy and authenticity to the Christian indie rock scene. While many of the band’s songs had an energetic, almost punk-rock feel to them, they weren’t afraid to slow things down while throwing in some strings and keyboard.

They released an independent demo before signing to Floodgate Records, where they put out one EP-The Existence EP-and two full length albums, The Need to Feel Alive and Chapters. The band broke up in 1999.

Gryp

This band from Fresno, California never got huge, but they nevertheless had a strong following of devoted fans. Their first album, Indecision, serves as a showcase for lead singer Curtis Shamlin’s unique voice which could hold a scream or a growl for an impressive amount of time.

They were briefly signed to W Records, a division of Walden media.

5 Best Comic Superheroes that Fans Can't Get Enough Of

Fame, fortune, and tons and tons of merchandise are only some of the perks of being a famous superhero. Comicbooks have spawned hundreds of crime-fighting champions, and superpowers have ranged from being able to shape the cosmos with a single thought down to being able to detach your arm for no apparent reason (we kid you not-Google “Arm-Fall-Off Boy” if you want to learn more about him). But amidst all the characters both new and old, there are a few heroes who have always been fan-favorites, no matter what the era or where in the world they may be.

Superman

It’s a bird; it’s a plane! It’s the superhero every superhero was basically based on! Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938, Superman was obviously not the first superhero. Not everyone may know exactly all about his story-parents sent him to Earth as a baby when his home planet Krypton blew up-but there’s no doubt that his huge popularity all over the world is matched only by his massive powers and his even bigger heart. Every child at one point in life has donned a cape and sped around the house trying to fly like Superman-who wouldn’t want to leap tall buildings in a single bound and be faster than a locomotive? But his strength, heat vision, and freeze breath aside, what really makes Clark Kent super is his devotion to truth, justice, and the American way. Often called a boy scout by his fellow Justice Leaguers, Superman never misses an opportunity to do what is right-and that makes him a fan favorite through and through.

Batman and Robin/Nightwing

The Batman is awesome. ‘Nuff said. He should get his own feature, hands down. Still, we may want to focus instead on the lesser known and often overshadowed sidekick. Robin the Boy Wonder started off as an acrobat, but when this young Dick Grayson’s parents were murdered, Batman took him under his wing and trained him to fight crime in Gotham City by his side. Eventually, Robin grew into his own, and like any parent, the Dark Knight let him make his own path. Now called Nightwing, Dick Grayson patrols the neighboring city of Bludhaven to further the ideals of his mentor. What makes Nightwing a favorite among comic geeks? Not only are his debonair looks and cocky attitude a hit, he was also supposed to be killed off by the editors in 2006. But the violent reactions of the fans prompted them to keep him alive and healthy, proving that people just can’t let this character go.

Spider-Man

Geeky Peter Parker was just an ordinary kid, until the bite of a radioactive spider gave him enhanced abilities that made him wear the mantle of Spider-Man. Created in 1962 by Steve Ditko and the epic Stan Lee, Spider-Man has hordes of fans that flock to the stands and grab his comicbook lines off the shelves every time a new arc is released. Now with four blockbuster hits to his name and an upcoming 5th, Spider-Man has certainly evolved from being your friendly neighborhood superhero to one of the biggest names in Marvel history.

Wolverine

Rugged, heals in a snap, and has indestructible claws? One of the most popular mutants in the X-Men, Wolverine is one tough cookie who waves his Adamantium claws around like it’s nobody’s business. His healing factor basically lets him recover from any wound, allowing him to live an incredibly long time. His mortality has always been interesting, and Marvel is currently teasing the death of Wolverine in the upcoming storyline “3 Months To Die” this June. Editor Mike Marts even quoted that “We’re not messing around with the title.” Could this really mean the end of the rebellious anti-hero? Knowing the comicbook world’s history of resurrecting famous characters time and time again, we certainly hope we haven’t seen the last of Wolverine yet.

Surprise, surprise… PowerPuff Girls

And the fifth on the list are…The PowerPuff Girls! Technically, this was based on a series created by Cartoon Network, but it now has a steady ongoing comicbook series because fans just can’t get enough of the adorable girls who seriously kick villainous butts. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup may look cute and cuddly-as proven by the long line of toys and apparel they’ve inspired-but they’re always ready to fly in and save the city of Townsville from evildoers at a moment’s notice. With superpowers concocted by their creator-slash-foster father, the PowerPuff Girls fight crime and prove that girls can save the day, too.
