5 Great Mother-of-the-Bride Dresses

My mother stressed over selecting a dress to wear for my first wedding. She wanted to look stunning at her daughter’s wedding, but didn’t want to take the focus off the bride. Selecting a mother of the bride dress shouldn’t be so stressful. I have five fabulous mother of the bride dresses you can choose from. Some of these mother of the bride dresses are in your own closet!

Mother of the Bride Dresses #1: The Little Black Dress

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again: every woman should have a little black dress. If you have a little black dress that is sophisticated and flattering, it can double as a mother of the bride dress as well. Accessorize with luxurious jewelry such as pearls. Wear a sophisticated hat and some killer shoes. Add color with a pashmina scarf or colorful shawl. You can’t go wrong with the little black dress as a mother of the bride dress.

Mother of the Bride Dresses #2: A Great Silk Pantsuit

A nice silk pantsuit made out of luxurious fabrics is a great mother of the bride dress. Choose a mother of the bride pant suit that has flowing and flattering lines. Choose a color that compliments the colors chosen by your daughter as her wedding colors. This way, your mother of the bride dress really blends in and fits to the theme of the wedding.

Mother of the Bride Dresses #3: A Cocktail Dress

If your daughter has chosen a black tie wedding reception, you may have no choice but to purchase a cocktail dress as your mother of the bride dress. Cocktail dresses are a lot of fun. If you wish to wear a cocktail dress as your mother of the bride dress, but don’t have a lot of money you can always look in second hand stores. If you live near a major city such as New York or LA, second hand stores may have designer gowns that have been worn only once or twice. Buying secondhand is a way to look fabulous in your the mother of the bride dress you might not have otherwise been able to afford.

Mother of the Bride Dresses #4: Bridesmaid Dress with a Unique Twist

A unique mother of the bride dress would be to purchase the same dress as the bridesmaids are wearing. Add a unique twist to your dress by adding a small shrug or jacket made out of the same fabrics as the dress. This will allow you to blend in the wedding theme, but still allows you to show your distinction as mother of the bride.

Mother of the Bride Dresses #5: Shift Dress with Fitted Jacket

A great mother of the bride look that I love is a shift dress with a fitted jacket. During the ceremony and while taking photos, you can be very professional and conservative. At the reception you can kick off your heels and take off your jacket and show off your gorgeous features on the dance floor. A shift dress with a fitted jacket could be the best mother of the bride dress for you.

Your daughter’s wedding day is going to be one of the happiest days of her life. Support her by choosing a great mother of the bride dress that makes you feel confident and gorgeous, while still allowing the spotlight to remain on her.

5 Great Movies to Watch in Honor of Deaf History Month

Many people are aware of the films “Children of a Lesser God” (1986), “Mr. Holland’s Opus” (1995) and “The Miracle Worker” (1962). All three involve a character that is deaf. However, they are not the only films to include hearing impaired characters. Here are a handful of others:

“The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” (1968)

Director Robert Ellis Miller’s movie “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” is defiantly one worth watching. It is based on a novel by Carson McCullers. I remember reading the novel in high school. In my opinion, it is a very moving story. It is also one of the novels in Oprah’s Book Club Collection. The storyline focuses on the relationship between a deaf man and those around him. It starred Alan Arkin, Chuck McCann and Sondra Locke.

“Johnny Belinda” (1948)

If you are a fan of drama and classic films, I’d suggest that you think about picking up a copy of director Jean Negulesco’s “Johnny Belinda.” It has an intriguing storyline that focuses on the tribulations of a deaf woman. I have to warn you though. It does contain elements that may not be suitable for younger viewers. For example, one of the characters gets raped. Artists associated with the film are Charles Bickford and Jane Wyman.

“Crazy Moon” (1987)

Director Allan Eastman’s film “Crazy Moon” is another one that you may want to check out, especially if you like romantic and funny movies. Its storyline focuses on a love relationship between a man and a deaf woman. I found it to be quite charming. It starred Kiefer Sutherland and Vanessa Vaughan.

“Amy” (1981)

Director Vincent McEveety’s film “Amy” is one that I would recommend as well. It was distributed by Walt Disney and starred Jenny Agutter. Personally, I found its storyline touching. It focuses on a woman that gives birth to a deaf child. After the child dies, she takes a job at a school for the deaf. While there, she forges a special relationship with one of the students. Other artists to appear in the film are Lou Fant, Barry Newman and Kathleen Niolan.

“The Hammer” (2010)

Director Oren Kaplan’s film “The Hammer” is the last one to make my list. I found it to be a wonderful movie. It is based on the early life of Matt Hamill, a talented UFC fighter. It focuses on his college wrestling years. Personally, I think that many young athletes will find his story motivational. Artists connected to the film are Raymond J. Barry and Russell Harvard.

5 Great Ways for Stress Relief

Have you a had a stressful day or week and just want it all to go away? Well, you have come to the right place then.
Here you will find my laundry list of ways that relieve my stress and put me in a serene state of mind, hopefully most of these things will work for you as well!

1. Put on some relaxing music and do nothing
I have created a special playlist of music with songs that I find to be relaxing. It doesn’t matter which genre these songs belong in, they just need to be soothing and of course, they must put you in a relaxing mood. After having done this, you let the tunes play at a comfortable volume, lay on your bed or any room with some privacy and comfort, then just let the music soak into you while putting all of your thoughts to rest and releasing all of your stress. Some of my personal favorite artists on my playlist include: Radiohead, Boozoo Bajou, Grizzly Bear, Beirut, and The Postal Service. You can also go on to search for songs and build an online playlist, this way you don’t need to go purchase anything, its totally legal and available anywhere you have internet access and some speakers! An alternative to this, especially if you have no privacy at home or live in a loud or crazy household, you could go to your local park with your mp3 player/ipod and find yourself a comfortable spot to lay down, close your eyes and just listen to your music.

2. Paint your heart out (even if you are not artistic)
As Pablo Picasso once said: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
So everyone has an inner artist within them! Dig up that old paint set you have somewhere or head to your local arts and crafts store or wal-mart and purchase some cheap acrylic paints, brushes and if you want, some paper or canvas. You could also use scrap wood to paint on or just about anything! Then go home and set up a paint area and just have fun with it! It can be as representational of abstract as you want. It can be a beautiful landscape, a portrait of your dog, or some abstract lines and splatters! Don’t think, just paint. An alternative to this could be to grab some blank sheets of paper or a sketchbook and draw or sketch anything you want, see or imagine!

3. Take a bubble bath
When was the last time you actually started a bath for yourself and filled it with bubbles like you always did as a kid? I don’t know about you but it has been quite a while since I’ve done this and I truly do miss doing it! So let that water run, fill that tub up and let the bubbles go wild! Go ahead and give yourself a bubble beard or a bubble bikini top while you’re at it! Some nice additions to this would be that relaxing playlist you made from # 1 and some good smelling candles.

4. Go to your nearest beach, lake, river or big tree
Drive out or walk if you can, to your nearest body of water and find yourself a nice spot on the sand, grass or bench that is close to the water and just relax, listen and watch the nature living around you.

5. Do some yoga at home in the middle of your living room
You don’t need to go to a class or group for this when you can simply do it at home! Just go out and grab some cheap yoga DVDs or have your laptop set out in the living room and go onto and search for some yoga videos. Just don’t fall asleep in Child’s Pose! (I know I could easily do this! It’s so comfortable!)

I hope at least one of these works for you as it does for me!

5 Great Tips for Summer Freshness

Sweating is a natural process, which can produce unpleasant smells. With the help of the following tips you can feel fresh and smell good even on the hottest summer days. Sweating is an important and natural reaction of your body. Your body ensures its constant temperature by sweating, ie , sweating is essential to maintain the body’s stable temperature. We can say that sweating is a must for the body, however many of us are ashamed of it. If you tend to sweat more than an average person do not feel bad about yourself, there are many ways to eliminate bad odor and those unwanted stains.

In order to effectively protect yourself against sweat, psychological as well as physical factors should be considered equally.

Physical factors

The most significant root cause of sweating is the temperature of your environment. Summer is here with all it’s heat waves, so everyone is sweating already. The associated symptoms – the characteristic (bad) odor and moisture – can be defeated by the following tips:

1. People naturally sweat more on hairy places on the body. Hair slows down the evaporation of the sweat drops. So one of your choices is depilating, however, it does matter which depilation method you choose to get rid of your unwanted body hair. If you have sensitive skin, irritation after hair removal can be worsened by the salty sweat, accompanied with a very uncomfortable, tingling pain.

2. All deodorants you usually see in commercials, which are supposed to prevent you from sweating, just clog your pores, so you better choose a deodorant, which allows heat dissipation but does not let the characteristic odor out produced by sweat glands. As you can see choosing a deodorant is a vital part of the struggle between you and your glands.

3. If you are a sweaty-type, than you should probably use talc powder instead, although it can be used together with deodorants. Talc powder binds moisture and contract sweat glands. It means that the wet stain on your armpit will be much smaller for a start.

4. Losing weight can significantly reduce sweating as well, as sauna and/or steam bath can help your glands get used to the heat. Usually 17 ounces of sweat a day leaves your body, which is nothing else but water, salt and metabolic end product, so your skin is also a major excretory organ. Sweat glands slow down producing sweat in normal circumstances, but when you are resting or in a constant but not high temperatures room. For example, while you are asleep in a cool room you do not usually sweat, although the glands are still working.

5. Love cotton? If you tend to sweat more you should prefer clothes made of cotton. Keep away from nylon tops since they not only make you sweat more but to add insult to injury, they will make you stink.

Psychological factors

For example, a psychological factor can be stress. When you are in an exciting situation the body gets in a so-called state of emergency and will immediately start producing more sweat. As a solution – besides avoiding stress itself – try preparing for the situation. If you know you are going to a job interview, get ready for the expected. Practice what you want to say and acknowledge that although you are going to be nervous, it is not a problem.

So sweating is something that we all want to avoid, although it is not only impossible for many of us but also unhealthy. Instead of worrying about it, why don’t you just enjoy the sunshine and if needed, take those advices above to stay and feel fresh even on the hottest summer days.

5 Great Uses for Baking Soda

We all know how useful baking soda can be, but I bet there are still plenty of ways you can use baking soda and you don’t even know it. I buy and use a lot of baking soda. You can catch great deals on baking soda around the holidays, so that’s when I try and stock up as much as possible. Here are some great ways that I use baking soda around my house.

Great Use #1- Garbage Disposal- Do you often notice a strange odor coming from your garbage disposal? This can be cured with ease as long as you have some baking soda available. Pour some baking soda down your drain and let stand for 30 minutes. Usually around a half cup will do the trick. If you have a larger disposal then most, you may want to use a little more. Turn on your warm water and let the disposal run for a minute with the warm water running and the smell will disappear.

Great Use #2- Pet Accidents- Have you wasted a lot of money buying different pet products that remove that awful stain on your carpet from your new puppy? Instead of buying expensive things that often don’t work, try using some baking soda and water instead. Make a paste with baking soda, water and peroxide. Apply a thick amount to stain, let sit for a few minutes. Then gently scrub away. Stain and smell will be removed.

Great Use #3- Eggs- The secret for fluffy eggs is baking soda. Next time you are making scrambled eggs or an omelet, try adding a small amount of baking soda to the mixture. Usually around a teaspoon for every three eggs will do the trick. The result, fluffy expensive restaurant quality eggs.

Great Use #4- Burns- Cooking that nice dinner and trying to hurry has made you a little careless and you have received a nice burn to complete your dinner. Instead of doing the cold water trick or worse yet the butter trick which makes it worse, try using baking soda instead. Make a paste with baking soda and cool water. Apply the paste to your burn. Let paste sit till it dries. It adds instant moisture to your skin providing you with instant relief.

Great Use #5- Chalkboard- How many pen marks and crayons marks are on your chalkboard? If you’re looking for great way to remove them then I hope baking soda is on your list. 5 Great Uses for Baking Soda when Doing Laundry

Doing laundry is hard enough but what do you do with all those clothes that wind up with stains. Try these simple but effective baking soda uses. It has worked wonders in our home and could do so in yours as well.

Musty Bath Towels– Baking Soda has excellent abilities to freshen those musty bath towels. Machine wash the towels and add a ¼ cup to the regular wash and a ½ cup to the rinse cycle. The results will be immediately seen. Wet towels or forgotten washed towels can have a strong musty odor, rewash with this solution and your normal detergent for best results.

Brighten your Whites– Everyone at one time or another has watched their white socks, towel and t-shirt become dingy after washing and wearing a number of times. To brighten your bleach power, add a ¼ cup to the wash when using color safe bleach or regular bleach.

Collar Stains– If you have ever had to wash collared shirts, you know that over time you begin to see mysterious stains remaining on the collar. To remove these stains, prepare a paste of baking soda and laundry soap and scrub the stain. Allow the paste to work into the collar for at least an hour. Wash as normal and repeat as necessary. Set in stains may require more than one treatment.

Cigarette Odors– Use a wash pan or bucket to soak the smoke filled clothes in a solution of baking soda and water. Utilize 1 cup of baking soda per each gallon of water. You can also add a ¼ of laundry soap to the solution if you want extra power.

Linens– Curtains, table clothes and other linen items that have yellowed with time or environment can be brightened up by adding 4 tbs to the wash cycle. Add a ¼ cup of baking soda to the rinse cycle for extra added power and softness.

The power of Baking soda can be seen and felt beyond the normal wash and rinse cycle of the past. As a child, I always wondered why my grandmother always kept baking soda with the laundry. Now, I never have to wonder again after reading her notes written over the years. When in doubt, I always prefer to add a ½ cup to any load of wash I do. I have seen the result and have enjoyed the freshness that baking soda can offer. Give it a try and I am sure that you will agree as well.

5 Great Whitewater Rafting Destinations

Great whitewater rafting can be found in both the East and West of the United States. The thrills, safety, and memorable experiences while rafting is often heavily dependent upon the rafting company chosen for the experience. On any given river, several companies may provide rafting trips which can vary greatly in your rafting experience. The fact remains – all are running the same river at the same water levels with the same rapids and dangers. Using well-established companies with established base camps and safety histories is highly recommended.

The first destination is West Virginia, easily accessed from most of the eastern states in a day’s drive. Featured rivers are the New and the Gauley. The Gauley River is ranked among the top whitewater rivers in the world and should be reserved for those with previous experience. The New River offers several options appealing to the avid adventurer to the family group. Few runs offer the totally exhilarating and pushy experience of the New River at high water in late April and early May. Recommended is North American River Runners in Hico, West Virginia (800-950-2585 or These professionals can best design the rafting experience best suited for you and your group.

Further south, but still in the eastern United States, is the Nantahala Outdoor Center (888-662-2199 or which operates on seven rivers in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and northwestern Georgia. Rivers include the Ocoee, Chattooga, Pigeon, and French Broad with various rivers better suited for different rafters. It is again recommended that you contact the outfitter to assist in your rafting selection.

Finally, the vast western United States is well served by a single company, OARS (800-346-6277 or This company has been around since 1969 perfecting the whitewater rafting experience. They provide trips ranging from the renown Grand Canyon on the Colorado River to Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, California, Canada, and destinations in South America and South Pacific Islands. The range of whitewater experiences allow you to select the type of experience you’re seeking.

Each river provides a new and different rafting experience which can bring thrills and visits to remotes parts of the world unseen by most. Even the same rivers run at different levels will appear to be totally different rivers from the previous trips. But regardless of the number of trips taken, your first will remain one of the most memorable.

5 Great Things to Do at 1st Saturday Downtown Frederick

Established in 1745, and a major crossroads during the Civil War, Frederick, Maryland, is a quaint, quiet, and growing community. The range of food goes from tapas at Isabella’s to stone baked pizza at Brewer’s Alley. There are museums, art houses, a beautiful walking area around Carroll Creek, and unique shops. You can especially enjoy all of this and more on the first Saturday night of each month. Museums and galleries stay open late, there are often snacks and drinks available throughout the town, and usually visitors can pick up special giveaways, such as flowers on May Day or candy canes on the 1st Saturday of December.

Here are five great places to visit on first Saturday:

1, Brewer’s Alley: With a history stretching back 153 years, this beautiful palace to microbrews and good food was once the town hall, and historically is where Confederate General Jubal Early was ransomed. The menu is extensive featuring the best in American food, from cheese steaks and brick oven pizza to crab cakes and Panini. As the name of the establishment suggests, their specialty is beer. With 16 beers to their repertoire, this establishment knows how to brew. Whether their year round 1634 Ale, IPA, or Kolsch, or their seasonal Trinity Stout, Hefe-Weizen, or Oktoberfest (among others), there is something to please every palate.

2. Isabella’s Taverna and Tapas Bar: If you haven’t tried tapas, what are you waiting for. A great social way of eating, and controlling how much you get, these small plates of food are shared by all, are reasonably priced, and offer both classic and unique tastes. Isabella’s is small, but worth it. The staff are excellent, and the food amazing. Cold tapas range from Pan con Tomate (a bread and tomato dish) to Salmon Curado de la Casa (a salmon and white truffle dish). Hot tapas are numerous and wonderful, ranging from every type of meat-beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, scallops, and so on-to numerous vegetables. Dishes include Camarones Grandes a la Parilla (shrimp, sea salt, olive oil), Pan de Ajo (garlic bread), Esparragos Fritos con Salsa Alioli (asparagus and tomato), and Brochetas del Valle (pork, lamb, and beef on skewers), but this list doesn’t do the menu justice with over 55 regular tapas (plus specials), in addition to full entrees and paella. Sure to please.

3. The Artist’s Gallery: Established in 1990, this artists co-op offers rotating arts. It’s fine to just walk in and look around at the sometimes unique, sometimes classical, always spectacular art. It’s more than okay to buy, too. Art ranges from photography, oil, acrylic, and water colors, to pottery, nature art, and tiles.

4. I Made This!: Everyone is an artist in a paint your own pottery studio. Located in the Shab Row district, it’s wonderful fun for the whole family to choose a piece, sit down, and paint, decorate, decoupage, or even slop it on with hands. Leave it to be fired, pick it up later, and you have a food safe piece of unique and practical artwork (though dishwashers are not recommended).

5. Weinberg Center for the Arts: Take a step back into the way theater houses used to be. This multi-use facility sometimes shows play, sometimes movies, sometimes comedians, sometimes orchestras, and sometimes all of it together. An annual showing of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in December is a hallmark for the community. Check with them in advance-there’s an amazing range of performances happening to this palatial building from times gone by.
